E3: Xbox Originals to end

One final release set for Xbox download service
Xbox Live's Xbox Originals download service is to end, it's been revealed.

The Xbox 1 download service is set to receive one final game release - highly likely to be Halo 2 - before Microsoft shifts its focus to the Games on Demand Xbox 360 service, IGN reports.

Apparently, despite having only a handful of Original Xbox games available on the service, after one more release Microsoft will have "finished it's portfolio" of Xbox Originals.

Poor show, MS. Where's Jet Set Radio Future, Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath, Conker, KoTOR among tens of others?

I have a large friends list and ever since Halo 3 was released NOBODY that I know has played Xbox Originals.

I think what MS really mean is that they weren't selling. No one really wants to buy Ł10 for something they have most likely played & completed.

Oh and the graphics etc SUCK!

No great loss IMO.

The XBOX Originals were always well over priced when you consider that you could buy the disc version of the game for a fiver or less.

On Ebay along with an Xbox 1 for half the price. Wink

True but as the OP said some gems were left of the BC updates although it is still better than having a download only BC service.

yeeeeeah, i was slightly tempted by the max paynes but otherwise.
would've been nice to see some timesplitters on there, specially seen as it's not on the backwards compatible list. especially if it got a following online.
you can get originals pre-owned half as cheap aswell :0/ just missing the achievements.
sexycaptaindave on 3 Jun '09
Hope Sony still supports PS1 games for PSN.
wildhook2 on 3 Jun '09
Good shout for Strangers Wrath, thats the game I missed the most when I sold my old xbox. If it was backwards compatible I wouldn't be so gutted cos I'd get a cheap copy off ebay, but there we go... Sad

50 PS1 games are coming over the next year apparently

Who the hell wants to play PS1 games nowadays??? PS2, fair enough, and *maybe* 1 or 2 PS1/N64 games, but it's hardly something to shout about Rolling Eyes

Thats a fair point but I'd imagine quite a few would like to play games like FF7, 8 and 9 or the first 3 resident evils , but I agree, the majority of ps1 games would not be very desirable these days.
As for ps2 games on the store, the ps2 is still selling a modest amount so until it gets phased out completely I can't see it happening.

MAKE BEYOND GOOD AND EVIL BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE YOU f**k TARDS!!!
ledickolas on 3 Jun '09
If they Added achievements they would have sold bucket loads (only reason I have not purchased one) I would have played through halo again if they added them even though I have a hard copy .

Cos there is thousands of PS1 games that are much better than Xbox games.

FF7,8, etc.
Resident Evil series.
MGS series.
GTA 1 and 2.
Tomb Raider series.
etc.

And they will look great on PSP Go.
wildhook2 on 3 Jun '09
Not to mention the xbox original emulator that dosn't work properly with games such as Panzer Dragoon Orta Pal version which crashes after the 3rd level. Poor show indeed MS. Sort your BC out before giving up.
sonic_uk on 3 Jun '09
wow wow wow before you go all fan boy and slam MS for not supporting BC anymore why not look at your beloved PS3? you may have a BC PS3 but anyone buying a newer PS3 will not be able to play old games since Sony removed the functionality from the hardware. the only option they have (Sony's plan no doubt) is to download PS1 games at a premium price instead of purchasing the disc for mere pennies. and dont give me the 360 fanboy argument because i own a PS3 also.

I wouldn't call 3.99 - 4.99 a premium price, 10 quid on the other hand is day light robbery.

That's your opinion, I still play Mega Drive games both on my Mega Drive and the Wii's Virtual console
DarrenR on 4 Jun '09
Funny, cause i literally only just bought Max Payne on it there now. Taking a f**king age to download though, 5GB FTL! But yeah i hope the last release is Halo 2.
gazza_be on 4 Jun '09
So what will games on demand cost I wonder. Originals were way too expensive. I'd like more info on the games on demnad as it might be a good way to kill a rainy day. Nothing on marketplace is cheap though, except those god awful community games.

The only problem with you post is that its not actually correct.

Yes anything but the original 60gig PS3 does not have BC for PS2 titles, however every PS3 will quite happily play all PS1 titles.

The main advantage of DL PS1 title is the ability to transfer them to a PSP, however if you have them on disc still (or can get a copy on disc) you can play them on any PS3.

A good game is a good game regardless of graphics or age. Therefore there are loads of old games I would love to have as a downloadable version. Especially as 4 player games seem to be on their way into extinction with the advent of online games. If we want to get together and play a 4 player game we generally have to boot up old classics (powerstone, mashed, micromachines etc).

And many of those games you've listed have been re-made or re-released on another platform - and often bettered too...
