Modern Warfare 2 may seem to capture the chaos you'd imagine of war - and look stunningly realistic too - but studio head Vince Zampella says Infinity Ward aims for entertainment, not simulation.
"We go for authenticity not realism," Zampella told Official PlayStation Magazine. "We're not making a sim, we're making entertainment. We want it to look real like an action movie."

Zamplella explains why the futuristic weapons, like a tripod gun that uses lasers to detect and shoot enemies, don't ruin the game's authenticity. "You see a guy in an action movie, what he does is a little over the top. It makes for a great movie."
Elsewhere in OPM's huge 11-page feature, the mag details an open-world level set in Brazil, which it describes as a "huge sprawling shanty town full of multiple routes and areas." But IW won't go overboard with open-world mechanics, insists Zampella.
"We do it where it fits and doesn't make the game worse," he explained. "There isn't any mandate that every level has to be a wide open sandbox. There are certain levels like this where it fits naturally."

I haven't bought any of the previous COD games, but I think I will be buying this one. Might get MW 1 secondhand too see what the fuss is about, but have heard that the single player campaign is a tad short. Can anyone shed light as to whether this is the case, and if the second one is going to be bigger in 1 player?
They hit a nice balance in the first modern warfare in terms of authenticity and realism.
I just hope they dont do this for every level as I prefered the levels such as War Pig and Charlie Dont Surf over the more action movie like levels such as Game Over and Heat. The realistic approach was what made the first such a winner in my eyes.
Needless to say i dont think i will be remembering the level that they showed off at e3. Modern Ice climbing
infinty ward don't seem to get why everyone loved cod4! There'll be frickin sharks with frickin laser beams on their head in this one. Well done on f*cking things up IW.
Thought COD4 was great. wont be buying this out of principle as it has a Ł54.99 RRP. Its not like we will be stuck for choice for good games in the run up to christmas.

I manage to get a hands-on Modern Warfare 2 at E3 this year, I would highly suggest if your thinking on getting this game, Get Modern Warfare 1 first. The plots do intertwine with each other.
dont like the settings as much, loved the russian type setting of the last one. and i hope they dont go overboard with the cheesy action stuff. they didnt in CoD4, but sounds like they are ramping it up on this one.
cheesy scenes can ruin it. like bourne whatever one it was. great thriller... then he surfs a dead body through the air down about 7 flights of stairs, then dusts himself down and carries on...
IW seem hit the nail on it's head, in some cases too much realism can become overly boring and complex. Video games are designed to entertain and take you out of the real world for a time or two.

They won't charge that. If you aren't able to pick this up for the usual Ł39.99 on release day from a good number of retailers, I'll give insette a hug.
i got SF4 off amazon, brand new, day one, Ł25 from amazon. activision has pushed this price because its a big name game. c**ts. wont be buying at Ł45. only a fiver extra - but f**k them - whats next?!

As a rule, the pre-order price on Amazon drops closer to release day
I got in on Amazon's pre-order for CoD:MW2 early on and thus I will get it for 31.03 GBP. Now include VAT and transport to the continental EU country I reside in and the total comes in at 36.96 GBP. I can live with that for this title.
P.S. It should be noted that the above is the PC version of the game which generally tend to be cheaper than the console counter-parts.

I experience it the other way around (i.e. the pre-order price increases the closer you get to release day)...Unless you meant that by the pre-order price dropping it was in fact losing the pre-order discount?
i think the price on amazon has Ł10 knocked off. if you see it has Ł54.99 crossed out. i recon that Ł10 off is for pre orders and it'll go back to full price on release
I cant wait for this, but if it is more expensive than most games on release then I simply wont buy it.
Not until it comes down in price anyway, cos they are gonna make you pay an extra Ł20 at some point for DLC anyway, so they can p**s off if they think they are gonna raise the price of the retail game.
looking forward to the new rainbow more. prefer the technical and realistic, less flashy s**t. but MW rules for multiplayer, no doubt there.
plus i think rainbow has a lot more room to improve, where as MW is just refinement - and possibly for the worse (cheesy OTT happenings) if they are twiddling their thumbs, since they nailed it first time round.

They usually have a disclaimer stating that "if the price drops between you placing your order and release day, you pay the lower price." I'm sure that Killzone 2 started on Amazon at Ł49.99 but was Ł32.99 by release day.

I would highly recommend getting MW1 especially seeing as you could get it for next to nothing these days. The single player was a little shorter than I expected but it was brilliant nonetheless, especially if you ramped up the difficulty.
I haven't the slightest idea about the length of MW2's campaign, I would guess that it will be around the same length as the first.
god i wish people would stop banging on about the single player length. it was perfect. BF:BC dragged on for being too long. put a damper on wanting to play through it again, despite really liking the game.
and veteran on CoD is cheap and cheesy. the AI must be on crack to be that aware. unrealistic.

Yeah, that's the way I see it too. This will probably be the biggest selling game of the year so surely the retailers will be trying to sell it as cheaply as they can to attract more customers, I'll be amazed if it ends up being Ł55 everywhere come release day. Then again, they know a lot of people would be willing to pay that much for it.............

That's true; Amazon does have that disclaimer and I've had it happen to me but so far only in between the intial pre-order date and the release date. By the time the release date comes around the price has often gone back up and is closer to the original RRP. One does get lucky on occassion though.
Moral of the story? The early bird gets the worm and all that.

Not if you buy it in many retail stores. In quite a number of places they still charge more for CoD4 than some recently released games. It's shocking. Online is a much better bet however.
all games are Ł50 RRP and the retailers take a tenner off it. noone sells games at RRP.
Woolies used to! And people wonder why they went under.
I have never bought CoD4. Partly because loads of places charge stupid money for it second hand, and I always seem to miss it at a decent price online. And then its not the GOTY edition.
Also, it's been out ages and I'm pretty sure I'll get my bottom handed to me on a plate the moment I step online!

True, it did make it unrealistic ,but that's the point the guy in the article was making, they are going for entertainment not realism.
veteran wasnt enteraining though... run to cover, regenerate, pick off baddy, repeat x 100.
you felt it was cheap so that for me stripped it of any entertainment or realism.
Yeah fair point alright, my sixaxis has never been the same since I flung it at the floor during the sniper mission. The second hardest difficulty (the name for it escapes me) was a good challenge without being stupidly hard though.

Really? for a two year old game?, the demand is still there for it I suppose. I'm not so confident about the price of the second one now all of a sudden.
Although you would need your head examined to buy anything from a retail store over here in Ireland, tis daylight robbery compared to the prices online.
COD4 was a nice balance of realism and action, far better then counter-strike atleast. And the Hardcore mode added to that and made the game fun. I'll be getting it at release.
to be honoust they wouldnt be able to make a good sim if they tried. there's much more to it than great atmosphere. like whats with regenerating health, no tactics whatsoever, arcady bullet/gun physics, unreal damage (even on veteran), invincible squad and AI which can be so stupid on your side and then god-like for the enemies. ya and laser guns?
not sure what this comment is all about as anyone who ever thought this game was a sim is kind of stupid and so clarification on that isnt needed. For balls out entertainment then cod is for sure a sweet game no doubt about it but black 2 is gonna make cod feel like a quiet picnic at a park.
god damn you criterion hurry the F up. and for real, 45 at launch? thats taking the p**s
Defo getting it, I have spent 20 days on COD4 multiplayer. However I don't think that RRP will stick, either the online gadges like HMV or Amazon will do deals nearer the time or the supermarkets will get in on it and seriously cut the price. MW2 or not I got COD5, GOW2, SF4 all on release date at least Ł10 cheaper than RRP so I would not worry too much yet.
I also agree veteran is shagpile, the re-spawning of enemies made me vomit blood, please IW make it hard without relying on re-spawning.

Sounds like the same scenario where I live. It still surprises me when I see teenagers go for the game shelves as I would expect them to be more tech savvy...Then again, it was only a few years ago when I was still buying my games in retail stores. Ease and comfort zones perhaps (and a lack of a credit card for minors)?

Yeah, trade in deals and the like would probably have a lot to do with it as well, though personally I can see the retail stores getting into far more financial trouble, and possibly going under altogether in a lot of cases over the coming years the way things are going.
Listen you cheap freaks.I'd pay $80 and do it willingly. We all know that its going to look beautiful and i could care less about the campian mode. Its a multiplayer game and thats what they made it for.I hope that just for fun they bring back shipment yard lol
I really don't care how the price compares to that of other games. I'd rather pay double for one IW title than half for most of the piles of s**te publishers keep throwing at us...
