"I made a poor choice of words, and I do NOT think that Sony is doing anything nefarious in choosing their pricing strategy," he added, going on to reason: "They have been subsidizing purchases of the PS3 since launch, to the tune of 22 million sold at a loss of $100 or more apiece (on average), so if they are able to make a profit on the PSP Go, more power to them.
"They are pricing at a point that positions the PSP Go competitively with the iPod Touch, and the PSP Go arguably has much more value than the Apple product. Notwithstanding my view that the price point is too high to generate more than a few million units sold, I really think my comment was unfair," he told Industry Gamers.
Pachter made the original offending statements during an interview earlier this week when he said: "[Sony are] ripping off the consumer until they sell a couple million and if consumers don't buy it then the price is going to come down."
I think he was spot on saying what he did. They are ripping off consumers with this ludicrous price point.
HGowever i can understand the U turn i'm sure there was a dtrongly worded letter from some sony lawyers onhis desk when he got beck from the interview.
I agree with all the posters above me, except the first poster. I can understand why he might make such a retraction if he was intimidated, but it does little to change the fact that he was right. The PSP Go price is a rip-off and Sony needs to get a clue in that regard.
Yeah - I'm sorry, but Ł250 for a handheld console is a 'rip off'...especially when you realise that it offers very little more than the current model.
I'm pretty sure the retailers will offer some good deals (Ł180 at Game) and possibly some great reductions when trading in an older model, but - as a starting price-point - Ł250 is ludicrous.
Hell - you can buy a PS3 for that.
I was fairly interested to see the redesign as I was considering picking a PSP up at some point, but there's no way I'd pay that for something that will see limited use (hopefully, it's release will see the older models drop in price).

Nobody can agree with Crimbo/insette, apart from fellow "special" children...
Patcher's comments were valid, but it seems like he could have burned a few bridges with Sony, so decided to backtrack.
I hope Pachter wasn't pressured into retracting his statements by loyal consumers of Sony who feel their favourite company was falsely labelled as a manufacturer of high-end goods with above-average prices, nor by their legal team. It would be a shame to see his voice silenced.
What I like is people are so quick to bash sony and MS have their loyal fans despite faulty machines pushing up their false numbers of sales (and yeah I've had 4 in total) Just watch the next gen of consoles ladies watch MS charge for everything possible (hardware options and even software options) they already screw us for batterys and live (which isn't a great deal better than psn) They already have had a small taste of success so next gen we will know it. One thing for sure is that I wont buy buying the next MS console after the shambles that was the 360 4 consoles to play just 2 average games? what a joke.
Pachter likes to think of himself as an outspoken voice of the industry but sometimes he gets a bit of a rush of blood to the head and oversteps the mark a bit. He knows he will be widely quoted across the world so he has to choose his words wisely.
I'd be the first to agree that $250 (They haven't released the Ł figure yet have they?) is a total rip for a handheld console, i'm just saying that someone in Pachter's position probably needs to use a bit more tact to get his point across in future

lets face facts here KFD that man is abit of a f**ker.
Is that a fact? I don't know the man - not personally nor professionally, so I find it premature to definitively label him with the term you've used.
if an analyst has contacts so far as he need to watch what he says, then hes not an analyst.
its like a biased newspaper.
Name me an un biased newspaper.
Of course this guy is going to have contacts and have to keep them sweet or else he's not going to be able obtain any inside info in order to do his job effectively.

I agree. They make the most cheapo accessories and then charge a bundle for them. Its cos of M$hite (and boring western devs) that I'm going off games now anyway. This is the last round for me

Now I love my 360, but I sure as hell wouldn't payout four times for one! Sony deserve to be bashed on this, as most 360 owners would (and have) bash MS on the build quality of the 360 and the extortionate HDD prices. Even you must think the PSP Go's pricing is off?

Some fair points there, however this article isn't about MS nor it's line-up. It's not even about the PS3. It's about the ridiculously high price for the PSP Go.
That said, MS should be brow beaten for knowingly releasing a DVD drive that scratches discs even from something as simple movement. I'm very happy with my new Xbox 360 and I'm glad I waited until the Jasper chipset was released. In regards to the battery criticism, that's fairly simple: You can buy four decent rechargable batteries and a wall-socket charging unit relatively inexpensively and pristo presto! You will then not have to fear running out of battery juice for years on end as long as you remember to keep one set charged while the other set is in use.
Ive not paid 4 times I sent them off to for repairs. I kinda liked the first psp (used my brothers or sisters) but wouldn't buy one I am not big on the go's design but yeah pricing isn't sony's strong point at the moment and selling a portable ps2 for almost the price of a ps3 (presuming price drops by then) is taking the micky. But call me old fasioned when I travel I take either laptop or ipod for them boring train/coach trips so its quake 3 all the way for me I'm not 100% if I'll continue with gaming either.
Obviously he's perfectly correct to retract his statement.
Ł230 is a perfectly respectable price for a handheld and the PSP Go shall wipe the floor with the evil Nintendo DSi and those silly upstarts at Apple with their ipod touch.
Is that good enough Kaz? Can I have my hamster back now?
Yeah I got a little muddled up with posts as I read a few before replying. All the same I did start a comment in the natal launch thing then phone went and got distracted so was my mistake. but glad it wasn't totally out of topic. Sorry guys

It came across that way as you stated people buying 360's again and again were pushing up their sales (they could have sent them for repairs as you did). You have no numbers to say how many have done this though...

No worries; one of the blessings (and at times curses,) of this forum is that enforcement of rules and "on-topic" is practically non-existent. Chewing the fat now and then, even if off topic, can be enjoyable, IMO.
I read somewhere on here I'm sure of it MS released false sales figures which included their Replaced units hence pushing their numbers up quite a bit. Correct me if I'm wrong thats what I was lead to believe. I've bought 2 in the past come to think of it 1 premium which rrod then I got a replacement that went pop so I thought FU premium and bought an elite which went 8 months later so I'm on second elite now. and if that goes it stays gone.

Not that this article has anything to do with Microsoft, however, are you seriously suggesting that just because MS may rip off the consumer, that validates Sonys decision to too?
I'd have to agree with him about the PSP Go but someone please tell me this...How can Nintendo justify making us pay Ł72 (Ł35 for Wiimote, Ł17 for nunchuck and Ł20 for Wii Motion Plus) for a motion plus enable second controller? Yes, yes, we'll have the Fanboys saying it's not exacly neccesary to have the extra nunchuck or the extra Motion Plus add on but certain games you NEED the extra add on to play, Say that even if you can play Virtua Tennis 2 play with one Wiimote with motion plus and one without, that will probably give an unfair advantage.
I am so annoyed with this Motion Plus and Nintendo in general for such a brazzen attemp to fleece the loyal customers of their hard earned cash (Ive already spent over Ł100 for 2 extra controllers, and the irony is I hardly ever use the machine now!). I for one will be boycotting the Motion plus...
