Microsoft has effectively reached a "level third-party playing field" for exclusive titles, with the announcement of Metal Gear Solid Rising for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
That's according to Xbox strategy boss Shane Kim, who told Gamasutra "I still think exclusive content is really important.
"We've said for a long time that a key part of our strategy with Xbox 360 was a level third-party playing field," he said. "Now we've effectively done that with Metal Gear Solid coming to the Xbox 360.
"The economics are such that third parties also have to support multiple platforms, and you can't ignore Xbox 360. It's the second leading platform."
According to Kim it's too much of a "business-driver" for anyone other than a first-party company to focus on a single platform, so it's up to the likes of Microsoft Game Studios, Rare and Turn 10 to deliver the bulk of Xbox 360's exclusive content.
"Now, we're having success with third parties because we can still get exclusive downloadable content, because of the service we've built with Live and the business we've been able to generate for third-party publishers there," said Kim.
"But I also think we have to broaden our definition of exclusive content now. It has to include things like Xbox Live, because I do think Xbox Live is a real competitive differentiator for us.
"And now Project Natal is going to be an exclusive thing, too. And so, we feel good about how that's shaping up, but it's really not about relying on third parties, because I don't think that that is sustainable, as we've proven. And it's up to each of us to differentiate on our own."
They are making such a big deal out of this. I mean it's not even a proper Metal Gear Solid game, but more like a spinoff or something. Action game. For some reason they are forgetting MGS2 on the xbox.
I don't know, I think this is quite a hilarious situation with them screaming with joy like little kids, acting almighty about a spinoff and meanwhle the real Metal Gear Solid game and sequel to MGS3, Peace Walker is coming to PSP, a handheld and not a home console.
The guy's right, it's all about maximising profits and minimising risks for the 3rd Party devs, so the historically Sony only franchises were bound to go multi-platform sooner rather than later.
Then there's the small matter of the hardware manufacturers spending big on exclusive content and timed exclusivity which if it happens in the case of MGS will probably cost a serious wedge.
I guess he's getting at MS having access to GTA and now MGS. But it's the first party exclusives that make the difference by and large, and while I'm not worried about having nothing to play on my 360, Sony seems to be trumping MS in 2009/10 so far.
Regarding MGS - if it played more like Ninja Gaiden and not like a stealth game, there's actually a chance I'd buy it!
Stealth games just don't do it for me. With the very slight exception of Hitman many moons ago.

Well, it's not labeled "Tactical Espionage Action" anymore but "Lightning Bolt Action", so it looks like Rising will be something like Ninja Gaiden, especially when you have Raiden as a main protagonist and judging on his performance in MGS4 with all his acrobatic ninja moves it looks like he's more or less right. At least it looks like that from the indications.

Well, Kojima said that he's 'only' a producer of Rising together with some other guy, that he's not directing it and that the game he's working on is the Peace Walker for PSP so yeah, Rising will be probably quite different from "proper" MGS games, hopefully in a good way. Ninja Gaiden style game with Raiden could be a lot of fun.

What i dont get about this whole next gen is why sony nintendo microsoft,dont do the gamming world a big favour and bring out consoles that all play the same games,i do belive this is the future of gaming . If it comes out on 2 UMDs it'll be because of sound like with MGS4 and not because of cinematics as they are always ingame
Those 'jokes' about exaggerating the installs/cutscenes are old and just boring. You see it's quite annoying and really boring to read the same old joke year after MGS4, especially when the joke is based on wrong facts. It's not the cutscenes but the sound. The sound. At least get that one right if you want to joke about MGS4.

my initial reaction was that it will be s**te. i did then say i hope it will be decent. and keyword - companion. it could compliment the MGS series nicely, but i think it will play differently - and different from an already stellar formula (for me) will probably mean s**te.

MGS usually means a stealth game and if this is radically different i.e. a balls out action game then it isn't MGS. they could just drop the Solid part of the name and revert back to Metal Gear then i think that would be acceptable. mind you will there even be a Metal Gear mech in the game? obviously there has to be some sort of connection with the series and i don't think having just Raiden does that.

Let me tell you why....The bluray drive in the PS3 can only read at 1 speed...that speed is 1x. Becuase of this sections of the game cant be read from the bluray on the fly, so we are forced to endure these BULLS(*T installations. This means technically the BLURAY DRIVE IN THE PS3 IS A DISADVANTAGE! NOT A PLUS!.
My point is this...I would rather switch DVD's which only takes 15 secs MAX than wait for a bloody game to install + BETTER GRAPHICS YES PLEASE.
360 owners are doing you a favour with this franchise...You wait and see how many sales this game makes on release unlike MGS for PS3 which sales record is pathetic for a console seller title.

My point is this...I would rather switch DVD's which only takes 15 secs MAX than wait for a bloody game to install + BETTER GRAPHICS YES PLEASE.

devil may cry 4,grand theft auto,final fantasy,and now metal gear solid,it goes to show you that the tables are turning for xbox 360 and sony. 22 million xbox360s sold in the us compared to 8.5 ps3 sold in the us.over all 30 million 360s,20 million ps3.sony is doing better over seas,which i dont really care cause i live in the states compare it to the national football league the best american sport.out side of the us its nothing,my opinion why bother with sony here, keep out of here its from the far east..

Killzone doesnt have any way near as much FMV as MGS. MGS FMV is a higher resolution and there is SH*& loads, IN FACT THERES more FMV than gameplay.

Yes, they have lost out on quite a few 3rd party exclusives. But they are having their first party devs pumping out a lot of new IP's. And a pretty decent amount that I would say appeal to the Western audience as well. They have Uncharted, Uncharted 2, Heavy Rain, Last Guardian, Killzone 2, etc.
I don't own a PS3, but those titles look pretty good to me. I wish that both MS and Nintendo would develop some more fresh in house IP's.

sure sure, you obviously know what you are talking about... the fact that MGS4 cutscenes are ingame with the same resolution (just like in every other MGS game before) is just a lie, right? The fact that the cutscenes in MGS4 often go right into gameplay without any interruption is also just some kind of a lie, right?
to disregard it, especially if your backing this spin-off shows how bitter you are.
but your disregarding this game before we even have any concrete facts on the game. it may well be a pile of pish or it could be a great companion to the Snake series. how's about you wait until we get some more info before you start labeling it as s**te.
my initial reaction was that it will be s**te. i did then say i hope it will be decent. and keyword - companion. it could compliment the MGS series nicely, but i think it will play differently - and different from an already stellar formula (for me) will probably mean s**te.
i think the problem was labelling it "MGS" when its more of a spin-off. it is, a tad, cashing in on the name.
a bit like the new subaru "impreza".
you cant go from a saloon to a small hot hatch and label it the same. it got universally slammed for not being a patch on the original saloons... now if they gave it a new name (because its a TOTALLY different car and chassis), noone would've compare it to an already highly esteemed car. they didnt feel confident enough to start a new name. choose to milk the brand and it drives like a dog compared. shot themselves in the foot. very silly.

Funny thing is that i wasn't joking when i said i didn't enjoy MGS4 very much. I was only bitter that it wasn't as good as snake eater. I also said early on in the thread that my favourite MGS was the reake on the GAMECUBE. Which last time i checked was a nintendo console.
I know you've tried time and a gain to tar me with the fanboy brush but its incredibly hard to when i keep jumping from one camp to the next kicking over tables and whooping and hollering whenever a decent game comes out.
Go to the thread about Heavy rain or the last guardian and you'll see me saying what fantastic works being done on them.
Likewise i'll go and Say what an engaging game Alan Wake looks to be. or how ODST looks like it'll be an enjoyable romp.
Or go check the conduit thread and find that i'm p**sed its being delayed as it reminds me of half life and i 'll always pick an intelligent story driven shooter over some lmilitary rubbish.
Turns out the only thing i'm a fanboy for is a decent game and some fine liquor.
I presume that the whole "lightning bolt action" refers to the fact that Raidens' style of combat is more confrontational than Snakes? That doesn't however, mean that the game will be linear, shallow on story, or in fact, crap. In fact I'd say its doing the developers a disservice to suggest this before anything of the game has even been hinted at.
Prototype shows that action-packed games don't have to be linear, and as for story, surely any MGS fan would hope for a chunky back story to this character. Why should the story be lacking just because Raiden jumps around a lot instead of hiding behind boxes? The story is told in cut-scenes; something equally applicable to an action game as a stealth game.
Also, just because it doesn't follow the same character doesn't really make it a spin-off - afterall its still entitled Metal Gear Solid. I can't help but wonder what the PS3 fanboys would be saying if this was PS3 exclusive. I doubt they'd be writing it off so quickly.
Criticise the MS spokespeople for strutting around like the cat that got the cream, but don't lambast a game you've never even seen anything about. That's just daft!
