Cliff B 'not burned out on Gears'

And he'd rather put a shotgun in his face than work on an IP
Epic mouthpiece Cliff Bleszinski says he's not burned out on Gears of War "at all", and expressed his desire to never work on a licensed IP. Ever.

Speaking in an interview with OXM, Cliff (who's absolutely not known at 'Cliffy B' anymore) said that there's still plenty left to do in the Gears franchise.

"There have only been two Gears games," he told OXM. "There are still plenty of opportunities for things you can do in a cover-based shooter and there are still a lot of stories to tell in the Gears universe.

"I'm not burned out with the franchise at all," he said. "But there are tradeoffs. With an established IP, you're not saying, 'are we going to do cover?' and 'who is this Cole Train guy?' It's all there - the writer writes and it's a known entity. But with a new IP, it's raw and wide open.

"It's like solving a giant puzzle in your head, and it's great," he said.

"Whenever I talk to people in the business, I ask them what they're working on. When they say, 'I'm working on a new IP,' I say, 'Good for you!' because if tomorrow someone came to Epic and forced me to do a licensed IP - 'You have to make the new videogame for the new Mummy movie'- I would go out back and put a shotgun in my mouth," he added.

"Original IPs are the best-selling and the strongest titles in the industry because they generally don't have to adhere to rules or limitations."

For once, I agree with him.

I would like to see Epic try something a little more diverse though. They are talented coders but I just wish they would try something a little less 'In yer face'.

Put a shotgun in his mouth? Surely he means impale himself on a broken chair?

(sorry couldn't resist...)
DrLucienSanchez on 18 Jun '09
i think it'd be interesting to see epic work on a survival horror game or an RPG.As much as i love UNreal tournament and Gears. it would be good to see them try something different.
WHERESMYMONKEY on 18 Jun '09
hes talking s**t about freedom to do whatever you want... and then churns out sequel after sequel. who ever said 'cliffy b's an idiot' was right.

surely 'constraints' of a lisenced IP is a challenge to reflect the original movie or whatever and add in your own touches without straying away...

the world is still awaiting a goldeneye beater - think we need a decent james bond film first though. recent ones have been s**t.
svd_grasshopper on 18 Jun '09
If he put a shotgun from online GoW2 in his mouth, the lag would let him pull the trigger and then move his head out of the way without being hit.

Licenced IP's always seem to suck, I guess they are playing safe to some degree. Although I agree with SVD, I can't believe there hasn't been a really great Bond game since Goldeneye. Some have been reasonably fun though (Nightfire MP springs to mind), but not great.

The thing about Goldeneye, was the developers visited the sets and took lots of photographs. So they had lots to work from when designing the levels. They took their time also. It was not all plain sailing with the game either. They did have problems getting to grips with the N64 and had a lot of guidence from Nintendo. In the end, they came up with the definitive film license.

If you watch the movie now, pretty much all of the film is in the game. You can watch a scene and instantly recognise it as a place when you got a golden bullet shoved into your cranium, or when you tag teamed your enemy with 2 SMG's. I think that's why Goldeneye the movie is one of my favourite Bonds. Because it is so familliar. You could sell the game with the movie and they really compliment each other.

I heard from my m8 who works in Pizza Hut that they are working on Pong for the PS3
pedroukuk on 18 Jun '09
could you really be burned out at all? they didnt really improve on the 1st gears (made it worse actually) and theres no character development, no story and no decent level design. not really much 2 contribute to but i think hes right abt the limitations on licensed ip's but they have the name and thats what sells them to many people.

Forget doing interviews and get on with fixing gears of lag 2 - 8 months on and it still has issues. More than any other MP game

The problems are STILL there? I haven't played it in months. Although I wouldn't mind a game of horde and that never seemed too laggy.

I can't believe such a major release has gone on for so long without such obvious issues being fixed. It's actually a f**king joke!

In my nearest Tesco, GOW2 is more expensive than Prototype.
newsinthefield on 18 Jun '09
As single player games I had a very entertaining time with gears 1 and 2 online though was very different there is too much of the rolling and diving s**t going on so just gets too repetetive and unfair. hoarde is kinda fun though. Would be happy to see a 3rd gears game.
gogo65uk on 18 Jun '09
How about you bring Gears franchise to PS3 and PC (your birthplace) for all gamers to enjoy? Maybe then I'll respect you and listen to the crap that comes out of your mouth...
Nightmare225 on 18 Jun '09
Give the guy a break. He's a sodding designer, he doesn't write the multi-player network code or decide what platform it's on!!
DSMaster on 19 Jun '09
Better not be burned out. I want a new gears game this gen. Never cared about multi player because it has always sucked in oz, but nothing out there on any system compares to a good game of horde.

I'm pretty sure if he put a shotgun in his mouth his chin would take the blast...

Funniest thing I've read on cvg in a long while.

I'm sure if the lag didn't help that ALL the bulls**t would dampen the shot.
wando77 on 19 Jun '09
Ah nightmare the original Gears is on the pc and it can't come to 360 because Microsoft are the publishers.
trooperdx3117 on 19 Jun '09
I recently went back to playing GoW 2 the other day with my friend and we've not played it since. The game is total bottom..

"It's like solving a giant puzzle in your head, and it's great".

What is Cliffy? Trying to make a new type of game or trying to make one that isn't a broken mess? The ineptitude behind the Gears games is unbelievable. Its like they don't get tested at all and even none of the updates seem to really help. I don't mean just online either. The game is a piece of s**t and people praise it to high heaven.

The gaming world has just got so used to accepting anything that goes. It sad really...
