New York, NY - June 22, 2009 - Rockstar Games, the world-renowned publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO), is pleased to announce that one of the highest-rated handheld games of all time, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, will be making its way to the PSP (PlayStationPortable) handheld entertainment system. Developed by the award-winning studio Rockstar Leeds, in conjunction with series creator Rockstar North, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars will be available at retail on UMD and digitally from the PlayStationNetwork in North America and Europe this fall.

"We're proud to extend this truly unique handheld Grand Theft Auto experience to PSP and offer a downloadable version of Chinatown Wars for PSPgo," said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games. "Rockstar Leeds has shown incredible talent in creating games that raise the bar in terms of depth and innovation on portables, and with Chinatown Wars we have a rich, fast-paced, and incredibly addictive entry into the series."

"Rockstar's work with the GTA series has been an enormous part of the success of PlayStation platforms," said Jack Tretton, President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America. "We're excited to welcome the critically acclaimed Chinatown Wars to the outstanding line-up of great games headed to the PSP platform this fall."

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars follows the story of Huang Lee, a young Triad who travels to Liberty City after the mysterious death of his father. Within the game, players will navigate their way through the streets as they uncover the truth behind an epic tale of crime and corruption within the Triad crime syndicate, delivering the unprecedented amount of depth that has become a true trademark of the franchise. Specifically built for the PSP platform with upscaled widescreen graphics, enhanced lighting and animation; and including all-new story missions; this version of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars will take full advantage of the power of the PSP system.

Be interesting to see how it fairs on PSP.

will they upgrade the graphics at all? The psp is a far more powerfull handheld than the ds after all?
and how will they work the touchscreen elements?
J_H__ on 22 Jun '09
Two good questions right there.
CVG Gav on 22 Jun '09
The first question is answered in the piece itself...

"Specifically built for the PSP platform with upscaled widescreen graphics, enhanced lighting and animation; and including all-new story missions; this version of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars will take full advantage of the power of the PSP system."

...the second one however will be interesting to see how they manage.
Deadhead on 22 Jun '09
Wow, I did not expect this at all. I thought it'd remain exclusive to Nintendo, because it's a system seller, no doubt about that. The touchscreen stuff, will be a challenge. Using just the buttons, would that work? Not sure, but this is news I didn't expect.
The Bossman on 22 Jun '09
Cool. The PSP releases are looking good this year. With this, GT Portable, Motorstorm and LBP, I'd say the PSP has one of the strongest line-ups this xmas.

About bloody time, if you ask me. Mind you, FFVII is keeping me very busy at the mo.

Very Happy
Mark240473 on 22 Jun '09
It's the best portable GTA IMO so the more people who get to play it, the better.
svensk101 on 22 Jun '09
Didn't fancy this on DS. In fact going to sell my dusty DS next week Wink. Bang up for a PSP Go though, so am pretty sure I'll pick this version up.
dannybuoy on 22 Jun '09
Can't say I'm surprised by this, considering the DS version hardly sold at all, despite being absolutely AMAZING; it runs so fast and smooth, and brings some great new content to the GTA universe. With extra missions, I may have to get this on PSP too. Presumably all games will be downloadable to the older models of PSP too?
AJDarkstar on 22 Jun '09
This will be nowhere near as good as the ds version,
Mmmmgrolsch on 22 Jun '09
Chinatown wars was made from the ground up as a ds game. It will look better on the psp but it will play like a hastily made port. Rubbish.

I'm surprised at this news I thought it would stay as a nintendo exclusive.
matty2000uk on 22 Jun '09
I dont think you can say poor sales when it comes to the DS, or the Wii for that matter. For some reason games dont often fly out the door on these systems, what does happen though is slow and steady sales that take the game into the millions. The same happened with other DS and Wii games.

Yeah, you're right, it won't be as good. It'll be better. Wink

Rockstar don't tend to do hastily made ports. This will be a great version in my opinion.

bigger shock than anything at e3!!!
finally a good game that i wanted comes to a platform i own!! canny wait!!
collyboy187 on 22 Jun '09
This is great news, not that i have a PSP, but for the game to get a wider audience reach and hopefully more sales, coz i love it on my DS and i hope with this it will help to get the sale numbers it deserves.

Nope It will be worse, the game was built from ground up for the ds, taking full avantage of the controls. The graphics and gameplay is great on the ds, but with standard controls on psp it will be the far m ore inferior version.

For the psp, no doubt it will be a good game however it will be a step backwards when compared to the likes of vice city and liberty city stories.

Nah, Rockstar won't just plop out a port of the DS version. It'll be made to work for the PSP, with better visuals and more content. If you've never played the game with the touchscreen, then you 'aint gonna miss it.
Mark240473 on 22 Jun '09
After a few years of mediocrity, the psp is really starting to come alive this year, I've said it a few times but Sony are finally starting to pull their finger out of late, a price cut for the PS3 and a reasonable price for the GO when it is released (although by the sounds of things that isn't going to happen) and Sony could end up having a great end to the year.
flash501 on 22 Jun '09
i read that sony were in talks to port this to psp. and i knew it sold s**ttly on DS, so no surprise.

though i dont know what the game type it is. is it like an interactive book? Confused

i'd rather play LC stories i think. that was good.

and a portable MGS too... psp could be a possibility if i have cash to burn in the future.
svd_grasshopper on 22 Jun '09
Good luck to Rockstar on replacing the subtle nuances that the touchscreen and stylus were used for, and that got the game it's high rating, with a simple press of X.
milky_joe on 22 Jun '09
i nevr thought this would happen nd im so happy that it has.

a must buy 4 me

Very much agreed, although most people can't see that. The reason GTA Chinatown was great is because of the things that were not possible on the psp or any other console. Without the touch screen its gona be like playing gta 1 all over again. Nicer graphics aint good enough to make a port worthy.

And with all the class games coming out for the psp, theres no need for gta china towns. It will just leave for a load of dissapointed fan's especially when they are used to playing gta by todays standards. Fanboy's you need to understand this game will not be superior in anyway on the psp other than nicer graphics

HAHAHAHAHHAHA, OMG this is f**king great news the PSP already has so many amazing games and now we are getting another AAA game to add on to our already EPIC list.

Agreed it is a epic list, but it will be no AAA title, you fail to understand what made it a triple AAA title

Liberty City again? Hmmm, would have preferred a new city, or at least a revamped Liberty city, could feel very boring otherwise!!

Its good news that the PSP has another Rockstar game, but they will need to freshen up the city somehow.

True, I wouldn't be surprised if they are sticking with Liberty City with this one so they can save Vice City or San Andreas for GTA5.

WHAT MADE WHAT A TRIPLE AAA TITLE YOU DRUNK.

It appear's to be you that's drunk, or you have a problem with the cap's lock key. Or more likely a fanboy, calm down for crying out load. THERES NO NEED TO TYPE LIKE THIS. Seems your a imature kid, the ds controls made GTA china town a Triple AAA title!

I was saying that this game was great due to the fact it had great touch screen control's that you used to break into car's and hot wire them, make yopur own petrol bomb's, and load's of other things. It made the game different, it's not the best, but it was a great addition to the allready amazing GTA collection. Try it out for yourself, then you will understand.

I do hope it does turn out to take avantage of the psp as rockstar has already showed the psp is capable of amazing things.
Mmmmgrolsch on 22 Jun '09
It should look nice at least but it will be missing the features that only could be done on the DS touch screen. Play.com are selling the DS versoin for £9.99 the last time I looked so it may be worth picking that up now (if you have a DS and a PSP) as I am sure it will still be the better version. Wink

All this talk about Gta and gangs has made me think of my days when i was a gangster. I'm not into the gang scene anymore, but games like these bring back all the memories. Ill tell you a little story about my past. About 3 weeks ago, i was talking to a friend about money and how to get it quick. He told me that being a gangster was the way to go, sell drugs get girls/little boys. He told me about a gang he had been in for years now. He referred me to one of the people in the gang about getting me in, but like most gang nowadays you need to go through a initiation. I agreed to go through the initiation knowing that if i just took a little beating from them i would be in the gang and i could have all the money and little boys/babies i wanted. It came to my ACHTUNG that this gang's initiation process was alot different to others. What i had to do seemed abit extreme to me, but seeming as the bonus of getting in the gang were great i went ahead with it. I was taken into a back ally where there were 13 black faced chaps with glocks in their hands. They told me to take my pants down and bend over the bonnet of this car. They then started to penetrate my bottomhole with the glocks that they had. At first it felt wrong, but after i started playing with my 2 inch stump it felt pretty good. One by one they put these glocks in my bottom, by about the 12th one my bottom was bleeding and there was s**t, p**s and cum all over the place. When it got the the 13th one my bottom just about had enough and my 2 inch c**k was going purple at the end. All of a sudden i herd giddy giddy gun shots. One of them had shot my c**k off. They all then took off running and left me there bleeding. Lucky for me there were alot of people in the playground at the time and i was taken to hospital. After that i was out of the gang game forever. Lucky for me though i was able to find a c**k donor and i'm now stuck with a pair of balls and a 26 inch black c**k with a kink in the middle. I hope you enjoyed my story, i hope you take something away from this about educate your kids about it.

It's not exactly surprising. The DS GTA sold well below target. I think it dropped out of the sales chart after just 2-3 weeks.
Noobsaibot on 22 Jun '09
Give it a rest you Wii Fanboys (U know who u are)! God it's soooo tiring hearing you bitch like little girls in the playground, geez!

At least give Rockstar (and the PSP) a chance and see what they come up with before you start jumping all over it like a hyperactive child. I for one think that Rockstar had given the DS version every chance and had made a truly excellent game but sadly didn't light up the game charts, it is only reasonable that they are now trying to cross platform to a more target audience to optimise their profits and get the sales that will justify this exeptional game. I have the DS version and think its a very very good game but to be honest the touchscreen element is fun for a couple of goes but, frankly, unneccesary.

I'm sure Rockstar will deliver...

P.S. For the record I only have a DS and DON'T own a PSP.

I had great fun playing Chinatown wars on the DS but i will wait to see wether it's worth purcasing the same game on the PSP.
akinola1 on 23 Jun '09
be interesting to seee what changes they make to this. Hope they don't just turn it into another 'stories' game as they were ustter s**t.

the only lazy games R* have ever made were on the PSP so if this turns out to be another over rated load of twaddle i wouldn't be too surprised.

I agree and am also a DS owner but I feel that Rockstar will also strugle to sell this title well on PSP. Poor sales on DS were due to the lack of 'hardcore' gamers owning a DS and those that did downloading illegaly from fileshare sites. The illegal downloads could happen again on PSP but I think what will be it's biggest hurdle will be convincing the SONY graphic tarts to buy a top-down view GTA, regardless of new animations, lighting etc, and with titles like Resi, Little Big Planet and GT this will yet again be overlooked!

I can only speak for myself, but I'll be buying it, for sure. It'll actually be a breath of fresh air to play GTA in its original form on handheld. I never really got into the 'Stories' games. The open world games are more suited to consoles, in my opinion.

I think that the PSP is actually a better home for such a game than the casual friendly DS.

Also, the PSP Go should bolster the sales of the PSP, especially amongst the portable gamers looking for quality come xmas time, so I reckon the sales of the game should be pretty decent.

GT Go (whatever it is called!?) will slay every portable game this year though. In terms of sales, that is.

Brilliant game,my girls son is loving this at the moment.

His mum wasnt happy when she found out he was scoring heroin, lol.
o Raging Bull o on 23 Jun '09
^^ I don't think so! Dragon quest IX is about to be released over in Japan and the hype for that is incredible. Also, with a new Zelda, Mario and Luigi and a new Professor Layton title all coming out before Chrimbo, I think the PSP GO with it's high price tag, download only (for now) games and a 'Marmite' design (i quite like it to be honest)is going to struggle.
BYDO on 23 Jun '09
I have a feeling the PSP Go! is going to turn into a bit of an albatross for Sony if they don't fix the price. If thy'd brought it out and made it the same price as the DSi it would of been not a bad contender. but expecting people to pay more for fewer functions and a smaller screen size than the existing model is insane.

I have a feeling that alot of stores are going to downsell it compared to the PSP 3000 as well as they can still bundle it with software and get future UMD sales after the inital purchase.

If you also consider how big the used games market is, which will be non exitant on the machine. a lot of people won't bother because they'll never be able to trade in games when they are finished with them.

If Sony were clever, they'd flog the PSPGo! for £130 with some kind of voucher for a free game download on PSN and make the pricing of PSP games on the network incredibly aggressive. But they won't.

Considering that it will probably be really hard to hack, so the modders won't touch it. Which will basically kill it stone dead in many territories.

At least the Dsi is more powerful than the DS, has a bigger screen size and offers additional functions, which is why so many owners of the DS lite and especially Ds phat owners have (unless they like guitar hero on tour. grrrr.)
