Xbox controls The Mule

High tech unmanned vehicle
An Xbox 360 pad has been spotted controlling Lockheed Martin's Multifunction Utility/Logistics and Equipment, or MULE for short.

What's better than using the Xbox 360 pad to drive a Warthog over a sleeping pack of Covenant Grunts? Using the Xbox 360 pad to drive a high tech unmanned vehicle through a warzone!

According to an Area 51 spokesperson, "The MULE's highly advanced 6x6 independent articulated suspension, coupled with in-hub motors powering each wheel, provides extreme mobility in complex terrain, far exceeding that of vehicles using more conventional suspension systems.

"It climbs at least a 1-meter step, and can cross 1-meter gaps, traverse side slopes greater than 40 percent, ford water to depths over 0.5 meter and overpass obstacles as high as 0.5 meter while compensating for varying payload weights and center-of-gravity locations."

That's enough for us. This is what your Xbox 360 pad was really born to do.

Yeah, there used to be an advert for the RAF showing one of them swanky Predator drone thingies, and the lad flying it had a 360 control pad attached to his computer. Makes sense, I suppose.

So Lockheed those of the Widowmaker fame are now controlling an armoured vehicle using a console that can RROD. Am I worrying for no reason? Razz

I remember seeing that advert and was going to post exactly the same thing. I guess they are a little more comfy than those massive radio control controllers.

I remember that advert too.

In a word: Yes. See, it's the console you are worried about. This however is the controller. Just remember to bring spare batteries. Wink

I agree, the ps3 pad is a bit of a joke.

People say they prefer the ps3 pad simply because it's what they're used to, but once you get used to the 360 pad there is no going back.

It annoys me because it's one of the main reasons i rarely use my ps3 Crying or Very sad

I'm a bit surprised at the amount of people who hate the ps3 pad, sure the 360 pad is better but not by much imo, it's surely better than that shocking boomerang pad they were planning on releasing.
flash501 on 23 Jun '09
i totally agree with with you on that ingy whilst the ps3 is a good console i play my xbox more because of the pad. i know quite a lot of people who dislike the pad

Mehhh! Neutral

Now, if they were using a Wii-mote and Nunchuk, then I might be impressed. Wink

Although I really do like the 360 pad (even though I'm allergic to it...) I'd have to say the best pad I've ever used is the Dual Shock II (not used a PS3 so i've no idea about the sixaxis or whatever it's called), it's just so comfortable and I like having dual shoulder buttons instead of triggers as it makes the pad much easier to use for my preferred way of holding pads which is rather unconventional.

And, using a console/PC controller to pilot something is hardly that amazing when you consider that radio modems - which this system undoubtedly uses - aren't new technology. If you can attach it to a PC you can most likely use it to control anything via radio modems.
BOYD1981 on 23 Jun '09
Wonder why they're not using the super accurate, immersive and responsive wiimote.
Ryo_Hazuki4 on 23 Jun '09

Touche. Another sterling example of misleading headliners by CVG. You've almost outdone yourselves once more, CVG boys. Almost...

Ouh! It's been a long time since I read those works by Asimov! Thanks for the "blast from the past". Smile
