Sony: UMD-free PSP was always planned

They were just waiting for the digital distribution market to mature
Naoya Matsui, the boss of Sony Computer Entertainment's product planning division, has revealed that the platform holder always planned to release a UMD-free PSP once the digital distribution market had matured.

"We'd planned to release a PSP model without a UMD drive since the very beginning," Matsui told GameBusiness.jp (via Develop).

"But if we'd simply released the hardware, there wouldn't have been much for everyone to enjoy. We needed to prepare the right environment for it first - things like the transferral of content with the PS3 and PSN, and PC software to manage content like music and movies such as Media Go.

"We wanted to release it when the delivery of digital content was on par with the delivery of physical media. That's what we've been working on these past two years. We'll be selling the PSP Go alongside the existing PSP models, because it's a product targeted at those people who are more accustomed to digital content."

PSP Go, which will feature a download-only software model, is set launch in the US and Europe on October 1, and in Japan a month later.

So UMD was always planned to fail as a format?

What's next?:-
"Bluray was always going to be replaced by home streamed HD movies, that was our plan all along". Wink

They admit that now!

Either way if they want this digital download thing to work they need to make sure all thier consumers can use the Media Go! software ... Mac version for me please!

If Mr Sony pulled their finger out & developed that it would be one in the eye for Microsoft who will never support a Sony product.

Great, UMD's can now join mini discs on the great landfill site in the sky.

Ha! Moron, Macs are better...but seriously does anyone bar Graphic Designers and Publishers still use Macs?!

You don't need Media Go to download software to the PSP Go.

Shut up sony. Just shut up. No one wants to hear your excuses any more. Thats why people are switching away from your company. In 12 months they will say the ps3 deserves to be remembered as the dreamcast was because it was misunderstood and ahead of its time.
I would love to see what goes on in some of the meetings at sony hq. The phrase watching a bunch of retards trying to f**k a doork**b springs to mind.

So Sony spent millions and millions developing a brand new media format, when they knew full well that they would only drop it when Digital Downloads came into it's own...

Makes sense. Rolling Eyes

This is why I have no intention of getting a Blu-Ray player...what's the point now that Digital Downloads have come into their own.

One that will soon be surpassed by digital download... they've won the most pointless war of them all... so Sony.

Didn't they say they had no plans of dropping UMD as a format? Why don't they just admit they failed again.... oh hang on... it's Sont... that'll never happen.

Terrible comment, just terrible, and you have the audacity to say that we are the ones who are making the attacks.

Vast grammatical errors aside, comments like this make me despair at the future of the human race...honestly, is this the best that schools these days can churn out. :/

Why do you even assume that we all have Xbox's? This is an article about PSP...wouldn't it have made more sense to assume we all have Nintendo DS's?
