You may remember Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi revealing to CVG last year that a "major update" for Gran Turismo 5 Prologue was on the way that would add the long-awaited vehicle damage to the game. Well, don't hold your breath.
Answering a fan question on the PS Blog regarding any further updates to GT5P, Polyphony reps said: "Sorry FoomMan, we're around the bend and down the straight: the team's main focus at this point is making sure GT PSP (and GT5) are in your hands." So no more updates then, it seems.

The ongoing invincibility of cars in Sony's racing sim will remain in the PSP game out this October too, the dev also confirmed. Can't say we're surprised.
It also said there'll be no DLC for the PSP version, but connectivity with GT5 on PS3 was a possibility. "Polyphony has always pushed the hardware boundaries of every console it's been released on," the dev said, suggesting that this "does leave it open for you to imagine the possibilities".
Can't say I'm surprised, even though it's a bit saddening, that GT PSP isn't going to feature DLC.
If I haden't already traded my GT5P blu-ray in, I'd think that now would be about the best time, before the ignorant masses understand, that Polyphony is going to leave owners of the most expensive demo to date stranded, when the real deal gets to marked.
Didn't Polyphony already slate an early 2010 for this? Pretty sure they must have, since I updated my wish list to reflect it (yes I'm that sad I date my list)
I don't really play GT5P much now, but still bring it out when my little bro visits. It's the track list that make it repetitive, there's plenty of cars already IMO. And damage wouldn't really help that much.
Really stoked about the full version though, with the inclusion of rally. Fingers crossed for a really kick-ass Grid/Dirt-style damage model too, rather than the lame texture-swap versions in some games.
Guys....there's no way it's even remotely possible for GT5 to be released this year with damage implemented. A feature like that would take an enormous amount of time to implement and there would have been some evidence of it at E3 if it was going to make the end of 2009. If damage is going to be implemented in GT5 (which I'm now begining to doubt as it's something that will probably need to have been there from the ground up) then I think you're safely going to be looking at Christmas 2010.
The game has been in development for a long time and if damage does feature (as the teasing shot revealed) then it'll be kept secret closer to the launch date along with the other details such as car numbers, tracks, other possible racing license etc.
They wouldn't just start to impliment it now but throughout it production (which has been immense).

If PD were working on the damage patch for GT5rologue, then there is no reason why it hasn't already been implemented into the full game.
In fact, they could have been working on the damage engine since GT4, but obviously had to get the manufacturers permission before utilising it.

Release date wise, I think the latest is summer 2010, but xmas 2010 (considering they are polishing the game now) is overly pessimistic.
if it were to be released this yeat i would expect sony to be shouting very loudly by now unless thye are saving the announcement for close to the release of forza to steal its thunder?
anyhow, i'd like it early next year so i have a good excuse to buy a ps3 and its after my wedding so i will have some cash!!!
The fact that they released prologue without damage is what rings alarm bells for me. Why let a game build get along that far and then try and shoehorn it in. It really doesn't make sense and is downright inefficient development. Of course that may explain why Polyphony are taking so long about it. And I don't believe that 'permission from the car manufacturers' line and never have. The Forza developers didn't have any trouble with it, even back in the xbox days. The bottom line is that Microsoft will have two Forza games out for their console before GT5 has even managed to show effective damage modelling in a demo never mind actually getting the thing out the door. And that frankly just isn't good enough.
So the damage is just going to be cosmetic and isn't going to affect performance and handling? Bit pointless...

I thought they had cosmetic damage already in GT, was it just bumps and scratches rather then big dents etc.?
Cosmetic damage is a minimum requirement in racing games as far as I'm concerned. You do need to see that people have been hitting your car, even if a busted spoiler doesn't affect your downforce...
GT5P was released an age ago, so that not having damage does not hint that GT5 will not feature it as well. Not at all.

its even easier to peg down performance according to how many bashes youve had/how severe they were, then add some smoke.

If PD are as particular about damage and the effects of it as they are about everything else in the game i reckon they'll have put a massive amount of work into this and i expect damage will have a real effect on performance through aerodynamics at least. i don't think it will be just a cosmetic thing, which you rightly said would be a much easier job to accomplish.
i said the visual damage would be harder than the performance (due to damage) especially to get it convincing.
the effect damage has on performance is essentailly a limiter on acceleration and overall speed, according to how mashed up you are. and if you buckle a wheel, your centre line goes off.
there is already an option that makes it harder to control under high speeds (professional mode) they could modify that for aerodynamics.

PGR is an arcade racer - hence cosmetic damage only. Forza simulates damage and it's effect on performance quite well, but always up to the point where it stops becoming fun, i.e. it's pretty much always driveable to the pits. Games are meant to be fun, after all.
I would prefer GT (or any racer) to have cosmetic damage only rather than full-blown 1:1 damage where a bit of a shunt would render your car inoperable (as it would in the real world). It would be annoying as hell and not my idea of fun.

Do you always have to disagree? Always? I'm actually here backing up a game that you like and justifying the use of cosmetic over real-world damage in GT, yet you still argue. I just don't get it.
playing PGR or GRID is a totally different experience from playing GT. they need to be approached very differently. good thing.
GT isnt as 'fun' as other racers, but its much more engaging and is more of a challenge, which can be a lot more satisfying as a result.
That strikes me as an entirely reasonable, fair and cogent argument (and without cussing no less!). I agree with you too, although my personal preference is to have impressive damage models that do impede controls as the damage worsens but only up to a certain degree (which is where I agree with altitude2k).

So its been in development since the dawn of time and yet you're saying it'll be out late next year? Come off it, they deserve to go bust if it took that long.
Ive lost most interest in the GT series because of no damage( even though i have GT5 prologue, i much prefer Grid ). Grid is a fantastic racer( its not so series but who cares its great online with mates and damage ).
Either way, i doubt GT5 will even have damage on release, the recent trailers only showed damage on the rally sections. I have my doubts.
As for GT5 prologue not having it, who cares, as was said its only a demo anyway.
