An ad in what looks like a catalogue for French supermarket chain Carrefour says the PS3 will be €299.
The PS3 pictured is the current model, although it reads above the image: "New console, new price," and line of small print next to it saying "Visuel non contractuel", meaning "non-contractual image" - basically the picture may differ from the actual item, lending weight to speculation this ad is for the much-rumoured PS3 slim.
We're hoping Sony will clear all this nonsense up in its press conference at Gamescom next Tuesday. But for now you'll have to make do with grainy scanned ads (via NeoGAF) which, bare in mind, are easily tampered with by bored kids.
Really not interested in Sony's 'slimming of everything' policy, but if it brings down the cost then I guess it's all good. Hopefully the older model will also get a descent price cut so I can invest in one and finally play LBP.

there's an article on gamesindustry.biz stating that japanese and european retailers are not able to re-order ps3's from Sony until the end of the month and that stock levels are low. add this to the general speculation and i reckon the ps3 slim is a certainty. Good news i reckon.

All the evidence points to one, but it is, in my opinion, the best looking console of the generation anyway. The Wii looks too cheap (especially the stand) and the 360 has all the architectural merits of a nuclear bunker. The PS3 looks sleek and stylish and the gloss black matches the colour of all my other electronics except the Wii. No disrespect to the Wii/360 but the PS3 does look the best.
It doesn't need a redesign, but it needs a price drop. If more people own them then that means more games get made for it and more players online.

oh god, stop moaning about the price. the new 80gb infamous bundle did it for me. £279.99. i have no problem parting that much cash for something that gives me so much pleasure (shifty eyes)... the amount of games i've played and blu rays i've watched in the past 2 months is insane. i have said it many times but the slim model doesn't interest me at all. i like my systems like my women, with a bit of meat on them hahaha!
the fats will go down to about £200, im sure there are still quite a few of them knocking around.
the slim will be around £260, then after the honeymoon period is gone - along with all the fats, then im sure the slim will be in for a price cut to keep momentum going.

I think all the home consoles are as ugly as hell. Have been for as long as I can remember (the small psone was ok). It's so funny when a fanboy disses the looks of another console (not saying you're a fanboy or doing this!), when none of them are up to much in the looks department.
A hunk of plastic is never going to inspire me, so I prefer the smallest, then it can be stuck out of the way. That'll be the GC and wii then.

I used to think the MD sitting on top of the Mega CD looked pretty sweet as a youngster!
Sony need to drop that price if they want to properly compete with microsoft. I do own both but only game on the xbox as i find the gaming experiance on the ps3 slightly cold and just not as much fun where as the xbox feels more like a community (although my kids are constantly playing L.B.P)

About the only thing I'll be upgrading when they release the slim is my hard drive - no aesthetic upgrades for me, I'm happy with how the PS3 looks. It will be nice to see a price drop though. Sony should have really made some of the inclusives optional when they released their system, like Bluray and WiFi, this was one of their biggest mistake this gen and it's one that they're going to pay for dearly; hindsight is 20 20 though. The global downturn didn't help their cause, either.
Release a base unit and people can upgrade as they see fit - like PC gaming. That way you can also charge more for the individual accessories and make money that way, too. It's a little more sneaky and subtle than just charging massive sums for one chunk of tech that does everything, but it works because people can stagger their outgoings instead of seeing the one cost and having a massive coronary in the aisle.
Also in my local asda for £250, not bad if you ask me.
