Since Sony's 3.0 firmware update for PS3, which added BBC's iPlayer to the XMB, the BBC has reported that PS3 "now accounts for a massive 10% of all iPlayer viewing."
"User response to our new iPlayer for PS3 has been amazing," said BBC's Anthony Rose. "Although it's less than a week since we launched, iPlayer on PS3 now accounts for a massive 10% of all iPlayer viewing, overtaking Mac (8.5%) to be our 2nd most popular platform for IP-delivered content.

"We'll have to wait and see whether this holds up in the coming weeks, but this enthusiastic reception makes it clear that users do want iPlayer on their TV - something that bodes well for Canvas and other IPTV propositions."
If you wonder why the screen dims every 20 minutes when you're watching it, here's what to do. "By default the PS3 screensaver kicks in after 20 minutes, dimming the screen right in the middle of your favourite programme. So you might want to disable the screensaver: Settings > Display Settings > Screensaver"
It is great, smooth playback and easy to use... or it was until my BRAND NEW PS3 SLIM's HDMI port broke.
Will be taking it back to the shop tomorrow, but seeing as I never experienced a RRoD both times I owned an Xbox 360 (18 months of combined ownership) it has p**sed me off quite a bit.
highly recommend searching for walking wounded and watch it all. good documentary...
especially when the guy mentally flips and thinks hes a pimp. all of a sudden hes frying on the cooker with a pin stripe suit, a trilby hat and 50p lucky bag shades on. also had a new playboy rug in the background. f**king hilarous. shouldnt laugh though, was class.
I was really surprised at how smooth and high quality it was. I was expecting a two-hour long streaming process followed by a pixelfest at the end. But no, I watched Have I got News for You, Mock the Week and a few episodes of Top Gear in comfort without pauses. I would say that the quality is comparable to VHS tapes. It's a great application.
I use it every night, and i think its a cracking idea.
The quality is much better than the Wii version too and i love having it on my massive TV.
I also went on Youtube on the PS3 web browser last night and it has an entirely different interface as opposed to the PC version, so hopefully that will appear on the XMB at some point too.
I think it would need to be some sort of installed program, or the ability to download videos that would allow for HD content. Iplayer runs through the browser and that struggles enough as it is with SD videos.
It is however very nice being able to watch iplayer on a TV screen even if it isn't TV quality. Much better than on a computer.
if i'm honest, i think it's great! i like plenty of shows but miss them due to simply not being around to watch tv =/ but the iplayer on ps3 is very convenient, and allows high quality, perfect playback of them all any time I like, I'm actually very impressed with it myself
it was a bit of a con really though wasn't it,i watched an episode of Mock the Week on it,all it is is a direct link to the BBC website
eh... where did you think they were getting from? ITV.com? BBC Iplayer has been available on the PS3 browser for over a year now. They've linked it to an icon on the XMB now that's all. I'm not really sure how that's a con.

sorry,i was expecting it to be like the upcoming Sky player for the 360,like integrated if you know what i mean
why are people so bothered by this then,if it is just a link?..as you say,you could get it from the PS3 browser already, and if you have it in your favourites, then its just one more click away

Like yourself a lot of people didn't know it was already available, just like Facebook and Twitter. Now it's on the XMB, faster, better quality and free.
Good for the PS3. Although the Beeb know f**k all. I'm still using the unofficial "Beebplayer" app for my Google Android phone since they still haven't pulled their fingers out to officially support the platform... I dare say the only reason that OS, the 360 and anything else you'd care to mention don't account for a sizeable community for iPlayer is that they haven't bothered to support it.

I think they were only required to support Windows, OSX, and Linux.. any other platforms should be considered as a bonus.
It's a great system, and a real pleasant surprise after getting my PS3 last week.
Think its cool that they put the iplayer on the xmb bar but not really needed..you can also watch youtube xl via your browser which works better on the tv than the p.c. format. plus who needs a sky subsciption when you can stream pretty much any show or boxset over the browser. Hardly use play tv since i got my ps3 online. try watch-movies.net and you will be able to tell the little chink with the dvds to take a hike

Sky Player is MS Silverlight - that's the only reason that it doesn't work on PS3.
I imagine all the Xbox will do is something very similar.
This is useful as it means that people who don't use the PS3 very often can now use it to get iPlayer.
