Wednesday 28-Nov-2001 12:00 AM Square has announced that the release of its epic PS2 RPG has been brought forward into 2001 No sooner will US gamers have finished scoffing their stuffed dead birds, quaffing cheap plonk and falling asleep in front of fourth-rate seasonal TV than they will be able to drag their corpulent, hung-over frames down to the local games emporium to purchase a copy of Final Fantasy X for PlayStation 2.
Originally scheduled for a January 2002 release, Square has announced that the game will now be released as boxing-day treat on December 26 in North America. Final Fantasy X is the latest instalment of Square's generation-spanning, genre-defining RPG series and has received rave reviews and big sales already in Japan. Featuring traditional turn-based play set in a magnificent, sumptuous fantasy world, FFX is an RPG fan's dream come true and by releasing earlier in the holiday season, it will provide gamers with vital extra time with which to explore the immense, rich title before returning to school/work.
As for a European release, no date has been set but the game is due to launch alongside the PS2 hard drive at some point in 2002. Square Europe was unable to clarify the situation at the time of writing, but we'll let you know as soon as we hear anything.
In other related news, following Square's poor financial performance over the last year - due largely to the failure of the Final Fantasy movie - the company's President, Hisashi Suzuki, has resigned. In the first half of the financial year, Square posted losses of $100 million, prompting Suzuki's decision. Suzuki will now become chairman of the company, replaced by current COO Yuichi Wada.
