250GB PS3 ready for Christmas?

Rumours ramp up as Tokyo Game Show approaches
Rumours are flying around this afternoon suggesting Sony could be set to unveil a 250GB PlayStation 3 at the Toyko Game Show later this month.

Retail sources indicate to MCV that the beefy console could be part of a 'movie bundle' set to include a Blu-ray remote control, Blu-ray movie and Sony's PlayTV attachment.

The package will sit alongside current 120GB bundles on shop shelves when it arrives in time for Christmas, chatter indicates.

Tokyo Game Show kicks off on September 24 with a keynote from Sony Computer Entertainment boss Kaz Hirai. If the 250GB PS3 is happening, that's where we'll hear about it.

When contacted, Sony said - predictably - it doesn't comment on rumour and speculation.

I thought all this would stop after the announcement of the slim in Germany. Obviously I was wrong.

They need to reintroduce BC, or at least make a BC model to go beside the normal one. I just bought a 60gb since I wanted to play some of my PS2 collection again- I'm sure I'm not alone in making the switch from a 40 or 80gb to a 60gb.

Makes you wonder why games websites always contact them for a comment on rumour and speculation.
badgerpog on 11 Sep '09
Meh - mine's a 320 gig PS3.

C.
yetiC on 11 Sep '09
meh, mines a 1.5tb ps3.. granted the hard drive is connected by eSata and sat outside the main unit, but its 7,200rpm as well Smile
Tobal on 11 Sep '09
It'd be cool if they offered a choice of hard drive sizes. It would be a useful way of getting a cheaper unit by not buying hard drive space you wont use, or a way of future proofing your unit when you know that you're going to fill it up.
brad.storch on 11 Sep '09
When is this ever going to end? - Model after model.- The general public are already confused, having overheard several conversations in various game stores. - Surely the drive in the standard slim is large enough for anyone?!
carterlink on 11 Sep '09
@carterlink Rolling Eyes Nope its not big enough for everyone thats why theres bigger harddrives out there. I for one have a 320gb and only have 90gb left.

And if this bundle is true then please reade again the fact it comes with playtv, where a large hard drive is essential
Mmmmgrolsch on 11 Sep '09
Enjoy your bigger hard drives while your wife enjoys my bigger DICK.
horngreen on 11 Sep '09
id of rather got a unit without a hard drive altogether tbh.

some people need the space, others dont.

i have a pc with 9TB of storage for tv shows, movies, music etc half filled thats networked and accessible all around the house.. so i could technically make do with a 20gb drive or something. the only reason i have a 1.5tb drive attached by esata is for running linux with emulators and general experementing.

different people with different needs. hard drive size is fast becoming the console owners quivalent of an e-penis tbh, and sony knows this. sad sad times.

So you think Sony should carry on, releasing larger and larger hard-drive models? - It's getting ridiculous.- Perhaps some people need less games and more of a life?
carterlink on 12 Sep '09
No I don't think they should, but they should however have two separate choices. 120gb and 250 sounds about right.

Im just saying that Hard drive space is a must for approx 90% of people. Its alot better using the PS3 for that all in 1 media hub connected to your telly. Ive got tons of music, films, play tv, pictures videos e.t.c. on my Ps3 and then around 50 downloaded games over a 2 and half year period.

@ Tobal, you rather not have access to some amazing games and the Video store Confused Thats abit retarded
Mmmmgrolsch on 12 Sep '09
They need to stop focusing on making new versions of the console, even if its just added size.
They need to focus more on bringing in exclusive deals, advertising, and all that jazz.

They are making a loss on each of the products (ps3 orig) (ps3 slim), every unit they sell still makes a loss, ..So why make more console versions? -_-;

They don't really have a choice, 120GB HD's cost the less now than 40GB HD's did 3 years ago. Also HD manufacturers don't produce 40GB drives anymore, no money in it. That market belongs to solid state now. You can upgrade the PS3's HD for less than the price of a game. I've bought as many download games off PSN this year as I've bought physical games and with download movies etc for sale on PSN soon you need a large HD.

Perhaps you're right. - They should make a choice of no more than two models and then stick to it. No changes.
carterlink on 12 Sep '09
If the package is including Play TV then the bigger hard drive is justified so it can be marketed to the general pulic as a digital TV receiver, PVR, as well as a BR player, and even a games console. Simples!

no, i said no hard drive as an option so i could put my own un-overpriced, faster, higher capacity drive in.

read the post carefully you f**kin gimp.
Tobal on 12 Sep '09
they need to support mkv support out so i can watch hi-def movies properly withouht having to convert first.
Tobal on 12 Sep '09
Personally, I'd rather them just make a games console and forget about all the other crap. I don't want a bleedin' hub. - What next, PS4 with combined toaster and teas-maid?
carterlink on 12 Sep '09
I don't think it matters all that much what size of HDD you originally get your PS3 with. It's so easy to upgrade, that as hard drives come down in price you're naturally going to want to upgrade. I'm running a 250GB in mine and it's original 60GIG drive is now used as an extra external drive giving me 310GB. In a year or 2 I'll most likely stick a 1TB drive in it and use the 250GB as another external drive. And so it goes on. Sony really have to be commended for making the disk space on the PS3 so easy to upgrade, it just adds longevity to the system.

Suivatam109PS3 on 13 Sep '09
I think more people should upgrade their PS3 HDD's. I have a launch day PS3 which I up'ed to 160gig then a year later to 320gig.
When I put the 320gig HDD in I made sure I went for a HDD that was 7200rpm after reading that games saved to the HDD (PSN titles) loaded faster if you had a 7200rpm drive. Not much of a speed difference but at least a little.

No more SKUs thanks Sony, concentrate on your games or what games you have, thanks.
BenJy! on 13 Sep '09
or you can buy a network drive that your ps3, pc, 360, mac and iphone can access...

works for me.
shellster2 on 14 Sep '09
I was just wondering as my original 40gb hard dribve is full. I know how to change the hard drive but how can I change my game saves from one console to the other?
alano0031 on 14 Sep '09
Keeping my 60gb that I have had from day 1, installing new HD soon though.I like it in my vertical stand with it's blue neon light running along the bottom, get my son the slimline for xmas. Very Happy
tezza2001 on 14 Sep '09
@ Alanoo.

I had the same worry and did it last week. You need a FAT32 formatted external hdd.

In fact, to save me waffling, check out the link, tells you everything you need to know.

http://www.ps3pad.com/ps3-help-guides/2008/01/24/how-to-upgrade-your-ps3-internal-hard-drive/

the video is particularly good as it shows you exactly what to do.

It's a piece of p**s and took 5 minutes to actually swap the hdd drives over. Took about 1/2 hour to back up and reinstall but it couldn't have been easier. Follow the link or just google upgrade my ps3 hard drive.

I had a 40gb and i brought a 320gb for Ł40 off Amazon and it works a treat, best Ł40 i've spent in years.

Good luck.

@the_angry_badger

Thanks a lot, that was very useful and I'm now not worried at all. Cheers it was a great help.

Erm nope you said

Nothing in there said as an option so you could put your own in. Perhaps you should re-read your own posts before opening your gob sunshine Cool
