Sony still "evaluating" UMD-PSPgo program

"Legal and technical" issues slowing progress
Sony announced yesterday it would be giving free games to current PSP owners who buy a PSPgo, but made no mention of a scheme to transfer UMD games to the download-only device.

Don't un-cross those fingers just yet though because an SCEA rep has said that, although it's not happening now, Sony is still "evaluating" the possibility of a UMD transferral scheme.

"We were evaluating a UMD conversion program, but due to legal and technical reasons we will not be offering the program at this time," a rep told Kotaku.

Will the lack of UMD support stop you from upgrading?

That, plus the fact that the PSN prices are only Ł1 cheaper than high street stores. You could buy the UMD games online for around Ł5 - Ł7 cheaper on the internet.

Get lost Sony, I'll stick to my original PSP 1000.

How can there be legal issues when Sony OWN UMDs??? Surely they can say a that they are happy for UMDs to be copied?
oleb84 on 25 Sep '09
but sony dont own whats on the discs.

never heard of 3rd party devs?

As soon as they said they'd be somekind of transfer program i knew it'd get bogged down in some kind of copyright issue between tranfering rights from one source to the other.

Makes you wonder why Sony thought the PSPGo would be a good idea, Its so far managed to to p**s off both Retailers and Customers alike. Devs might be happy but if nobody wants to sell the thing then even fewer people are going to want to buy it.

WHERESMYMONKEY, Seriously, stop being such a negative person on this site. It's getting tiresome. Whenever a sony related article appears, so do you with comments about how s**t Sony are and how they p**s everyone off. I'm probably going to get a PSP Go anyway, since I only have like 9 UMD's, I'm also keeping my PSP aswell, so I can use that for games. I'm not wasting my 16GB PSPgo hard drive on games, when I can put movies on there!

If all you want it for is movies, why not buy an iPod Touch or something instead? Can get a 32GB one for about the same price as a PSP Go, and I think the screen's probably bigger too...

Nope the Go's screen is bigger than the Ipod Touch screen and it's a better quality screen as well.

There are loads of cynical people on this site, WHERESMYMONKEY is just another one of them. All we want is a PSP with 2 analogue sticks, and digital downloads, so make it happen Sony. It's clearly possible to do.

Hey it's taken me a long time to earn my cynics hat. And its not every Sony article. I just think the GO's a huge bloody mistake. Not Virtual Boy bad, but definately a step in the worng direction.

If you're going to buy a PSPgo to watch movies on then well. you must have more money than sense is all i'm gonna say. You do realise that a new Memory stick for your existing PSP would cost a hell of a lot less right????
