Sony dev wanted God of War FPS

"Tried unsuccessfully" to pitch the idea to director Stig Asmussen
God of War III could have been a first-person shooter, had Sony art director Ken Feldman got his way.

"I tried unsuccessfully to convince Stig [Asmussen - director] to make 'God of War III' a first-person shooter," Feldman said during a recent interview when pondering ideas for the latest sequel.

"Kratos could have some truly badass huge weapons that rip gods to shreds," he went on to imagine. "Unfortunately he didn't see the genius in the idea," Feldman added. Thank God.

So basically, had this idea gone through, they would've ended up with Serious Sam?

Though I'm not a fan of God Of War, it sounds like an awful idea to make it an FPS. I bet many fans are glad they didn't go that way for number 3!

This actually gives an interesting insight into the inner workings of how Sony think. "No need to be creative -- just make an FPS, and it will sell!" So this is why they wanted Killzone to do so well.

Then again, what does it say about Microsoft's number one franchise being Halo? Is Nintendo the only company not obsessed with FPS as a genre? (GoldenEye as an FPS was Rare's idea though, as Nintendo wanted a SNES platformer, so in that instance Rare were right. And Metroid Prime is a first-person adventure, in a similar way that Oblivion & Morrowind are first-person RPGs.)

Note: I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the FPS genre, just that there is a little-known thing called "market saturation". That is all.

I would disagree (hold those handbags back for a minute). I think if done right, a FPW (First Person Whip?) fantasy with chin whips and blades would be seriously cool if done correctly.

With the Krackan rising out of the water towering over you, water running out of its mouth looking bad ass frightening not realising the only thing on your mind is to rip off its big ass head. This would be a great and more immersive experience in a first person view but I think the devs probably realised the balance needed in getting such an idea pulled off would be extremely difficult to achieve not too mention cost worthy.

But GOW is a great game and you should have a blast with the first 2 games on release.

There go those typos again, moi apologies

gow would be cool mirrors edge style with weapons, without the rpg elements.

Eh? Your mental! So one person wants to make an FPS and another wants to make a platform-action game, you decide that means the Whole of Sony thinks in a non-creative way!

Wow! Go troll go!

You're making a massive assumption with that statement. Sony have also developed LBP, inFamous, Wipeout Fury, Fat Princess, Shatter, Demons Soul, WKC et al. It's a bit stupid saying they're only interested in first person shooters.
voodoo341 on 3 Oct '09
No. Way. In. Hell. That would be my reaction to it. GOW as an FPS sounds uttlerly insanely bad, and would have been an insult to all the fans of the series.
BIGAL-1992 on 3 Oct '09
what a f**king crap idea. thankfully it remains an action adventurer in 3rd person.

Sony made LBP? Is that what you really think? And there I was, thinking it was Media Molecule. Wipeout is made by Psygnosis, who were brought out by Sony, so that doesn't count either. Fat Princess was Titan Studios. Demon's Soul is developed by From Software. InFamous is by Sucker Punch Productions. And so on. Sony don't actually make games.

For evidence for their love of the FPS genre, look at their marketing campaign for Killzone 2 VS what they did for LBP. Guess which game sold more copies? Hmm. I could also mention that Killzone could be done in third-person, and LBP couldn't be done in first-person. But this whole argument will be wasted on you, so I don't know why I bothered really.

Rolling Eyes Who do you think approved it and paid for it all, Microsoft? Wipeout HD wasn't made by Psygnosis and KZ 2 hasn't outsold LBP. If Sony don't make games what have Sony Liverpool, Sony Cambridge and Sony Santa Monica (who just happen to be making God of War 3) been doing?

Sony make and produce games? No I think you'll find they sell a blu-ray player that can do lots of stuff, I saw it on their adverts, nothing about games mentioned though.

Sarcasm end.

Thank you for getting the point. I don't always follow who is and isn't a fanboy on here, but do I take it Voodoo is a Sony fanboy?

Note for Voodoo: Sony Liverpool is what once was Psygnosis. They bought it out, and slapped their name on it.

Laughing I'd rather be a fanboy than a brainless troll who doesn't know what he's talking about.

Congratulations you're partly right on one of your claims. Sony Liverpool is combination of companies owned by Sony including Psygnosis as well as a few others. Weird saying they don't make games! Laughing

I am so glad that they arent making god of war 3 a FPS as it would be the biggest sell out ever. What annoys me is that next gen consoles seem to be the FPS console these days.

Not everyone is a bloody mindless shooter fan and where is all the adventure/rpg games? It just shows our western cultures obcession of guns/explosion/action over plotlines and substance.

Japan seems to get all the rpg games these days, luckily we have fallout 3 and oblivion at the moment and hopefully soon dragon age. But please game developers enough with the countless FPS games, ok some are good but a market full of FPS games isnt that showing of next gen tech no matter wether sony, microsoft or even a PC with its upgrade tech.

Innovation is what we want.

It could of worked if they'd used the motion controls and made it work a little like Red Steel.

Still hoping that GOW3 uses sony's new motion tech though. It could really add something extra to the QTES,

Hmmm, makes me think of the old PC game Heretic.

@ Darkstar...what is this rambling about Sony and FPS games?

There are loads more shooters on both pc and 360 - to the point where people often refer to the 360 as the best console for shooting.

Furthermore, the Halo series is undoubetdly Microsoft's biggest trump card unlike Sony who have historically been more about Wipeout, Tekken, etc in my view.

Surely this is a joke? That would have been horrendous.
