Japan: PSP Slips Further Behind DSi

DSi again takes top spot
DSi again took the top spot on the Japanese hardware sales chart during the week ended October 18, as PSP slipped further behind its rival.

Weekly DSi sales fell 999 units to 49,145, according to data from Media Create. In comparison, PSP sales dropped 6,500 units, leaving Sony's platform around 15,500 units behind Nintendo's. The gap between the pair was just 2,000 units two weeks previously following the introduction of a 15 per cent PSP price cut, although some consumers are no doubt saving their cash for the Japanese release of PSPgo on Nov 1.

Elsewhere, sales of PS3 and Wii remained pretty much neck and neck, with Sony's console winning out by just 300 units. During September PS3 outsold Wii in Japan for the first time on a monthly basis.

Total hardware sales declined from 162,794 units the previous week to 151,210. DS Lite sales fell by almost 3,000 units, Xbox 360 sales were up 330, while PS2 sales were flat.

DSi - 49,145
PSP - 33,508
PS3 - 30,231
Wii - 29,965
360 - 3,662
DS Lite - 2,590
PS2 - 2,109
