ONM has answered a bunch of reader questions about the upcoming New Super Mario Bros. Wii game, which is being reviewed all over the place at the moment. Mike finished it yesterday and loved it.
Once question deals with that all important topic of size. "It took me around six hours to complete, but that was blitzing through it and not collecting the Star Coins. That will easily add another seven or eight hours to the proceedings, because you'll obviously have to play through most of the levels again and some of the coins are in really awkward positions this time," says ONM.

Why is the article titled "Six or Seven Hours Long" when in the article itself it is quoted as
"It took me around six hours to complete, but that was blitzing through it and not collecting the Star Coins. That will easily add another seven or eight hours to the proceedings"
Can't CVG add up or something? Any game can be 'short' if its "blitzed" through. So to do the whole thing its around 15 hours
This game looks better and more hardcore than MGS4, Uncharted 2 and COD.
Sarcasm.
Best be trollin'
Otherwise, the question that leads on from this, is how old are you, exactly?
Back to the article, I don't actually think this supposed 6-8 hour frame is that bad.. Probably around the length it takes to beat Super Mario World (although maybe not in its entirety such as completing all the hidden levels).
I'm actually looking forward to this. My mates and I have had a lot of fun with the DS version's multiplayer, so 4-player Wii version sounds even better.
At first glance I was having thoughts about this being the next Super Mario World... Then I noticed how slow the backgrounds seem to scroll by. Hopefully it's just how the game deals with two player action because I'm hoping it'll be possible to get Mario running just as fast as in Super Mario World.
Also, as "plinky" as Mario music tends to be, this was a bit "plonky". This could end up a "day one" purchase, but the jury is still out.
Why are people such HATERS. The article clearly says that it will take around this time to complete if you just breeze through the levels but how many people are going to do that and besides the whole reason for playing Mario games is to collect stuff and the article also states that when you have collected all star coins something really cool will happen, much better than the DS version.
My only gripe is that the graphics, background in particular, look very spartan and seems like Nintendo have rushed it out for Christmas...The wii I know is weaker graphically than the PS3 and Xbox but im sure it can do much better than this...

Have you not played the DS version? This game will be fantastic!

Sarcasm.
Indeed it does. although there should be no sarcasm needed. This game will blow those out of the water. MGS4, COD, and Uncharted are not the definition of "hardcore games" (MGS4 especially). To me the definition of hardcore is Super Ghouls and Ghosts.
Now that is the definition of hardcore gaming. Not sure whats hardcore about MGS4. It's incredibly easy and you spend the majority of your time watching cutscenes. Then again each MGS game seems to get progressively more laden down with them. 10 mins play to 30mins of cut scene is not hardcore gaming.
Nobody ever said MGS was hardcore, what the f**k does that even mean anyway. You play video games, there is nothing hardcore about it. Just because a game is hard like Super Ghouls n ghosts doesn't make it hardcore, it's just a hard game.
You children crack me up with your hardcore b******s, you are as far away from hardcore as you could possibly get, and Mario was never hardcore either. You kids have a lot of growing up to do.
Well i remember being a kid when the first mario bros came out.
There's no strict definition of what makes a core game. So we are left to speculate this interesting modern gaming phenomenon. But considering the mario bros series is pretty much the grand daddy of modern gaming. its as core as you can get.
From your comment i'm thinking that you are in fact, in your mid to late teens. Not your mid to late 20s/ early 30s. which if i remember correctly appears to make up a large percentage of this sites readership.
I think we're all about as grown upoas we're either going to get or want to get.

Erm, it was in response to a comment by SoLiDsNaKE**, which if you bothered to read the thread would have been quite apparent. And Mario is very "Hardcore" (if that is even a valid term for a game) and always has been. Mario games are quite famous for being very easy to get into but very hard to complete. It takes a lot of skill to complete a Mario game fully. I do agree though that merely being hard does not make a game "hardcore", but then neither does the fact that a game is popular or has high production standards either. I personally do not like the term "hardcore" as I consider all great games to be on a level playing field whether that game is Wii sports, Ikaruga or COD.
And I have been gaming for 29 years on practically all the available systems over that time so I do not think I have a lot of growing up to do......

Totally agree with you. A hard game does not neccessarily make a game 'hardcore', but I do regard a Mario title, all of which require deft gaming skills, concentration and practice for perfection and high scores, as being a true 'hardcore' gaming experience. - If anybody doesn't agree, then quite frankly, they know absolutely nothing about old-school 'core' gaming.
I find it interesting that those people that really rate the Wii as a great gaming platform are generally over 30 and have been raised with a ethos of fun gameplay over fancy graphics.

I'm 14 and I think the Wii is the most 'hardcore' system out there. I mean take the Virtual Console. It's more 'hardcore' than Steam.
