The first Xbox 360 Avatar Awards have gone live, via an update for XBLA game Splosion man.
Simply update the game, reports OXM, and you'll have a popup inform you that you've unlocked an Avatar Award. Male Avatars get a t-shirt, while the girls get a Splosion Man sweatshirt. There's another Big Science T-shirt available, but you'll have to complete one of the game's multiplayer modes to unlock it.
It's a slightly technical "first" because Lips: Number One Hits has the same feature and came out last week. But Splosion Man had the feature since its launch in the summer; it's only now that you've actually been able to access them. So there.
See screenshots of OXM editor Jon Hicks in the new gear below.
This should be commended and encouraged. XBLA games have a great outlet to promote their games, and Bigger games should use it as a "badge of honour", awarding items to people who are top at multiplayer or complete games on their hardest campaign setting.
The avatar items I *have* used point on have been the game ones predominantly (Mass Effect and Monkey Island) but these should be made available to gamers who beat games, not any old prat with a spare 400 MSP... It would make avatars a lot more interesting and useful for jusging a gamer - only people who have beaten Halo on Legendary difficulty or racked up thousands of kills in MP get to wear Spartan armour etc.
Unfortunately the money-making potential will stop this happening, but more games offering exclusive items will get more people playing...
