Sky dodges PS3 player question

TV giant is "neutral about how people access our content"
Sky has dodged the inevitable Sky Player question this morning: 'When's it coming to PS3?'

Sky's Stephen Nuttall told Tech Radar: "So we - Microsoft and Sky - are very focused on making this an enormous success this autumn and working together to deliver a great project.

"...To be honest we're kind of neutral about how people access our content and don't feel we should proscribe how people should be watching Sky. Our job is just to give people options."

Sky Player launched on Xbox 360 this morning and is available to non-subsribers for £15 a month.

Inevitable and pointless.

I think I'll manage with the free to use iplayer in the spare room for now, thanks.

My PS3 is sat two inches from my Sky+HD box, so it's not really needed by me...
milky_joe on 27 Oct '09
This would actually work alot better on the PSN because it is free. Having to pay a subscription for sky on XBOX Live seems over the top as your already paying for the service. On PSN i reckon it will be more sucessfull.

However i will be sticking with my Virgin thanks you Sky!

The some of the technology inside a 360 is very similar to that of a Sky box, so Sky have been planning this for years. It's an easy fit for them and it's most likely been Microsoft's roadmap or Sky's licensing issues which have held it back until now. Whether the PS3 has the right innards to make it an easy fit will likely be the deciding factor. I could care less either way. There's nothing on Sky that would drag me away from gaming, and the more it become a 'centre' of entertainment, the more likely the family will take it over. No, leave it as a games console for me, thanks.

Giggity!

Wouldn't surprise me if it did end up on the PS3 as well and why not. The only reason iplayer isn't on the 360 is becasue the BBC didn't want to put in the effort of making it a dedicated space on NXE. which is a shame but nethermind.

Would really like 4OD on consoles though. It kicks the crap out of iplayer becasue its got the backcatalogue of all the great channel 4 sitcoms from the last decade or so.

Of course it’s bloody useful, on demand on demand on demand!! At present Sky have no way of competing with Virgin’s On Demand service, this is an interim project until they have broadband enabled On Demand working from their STB’s.

You could of course just access this via the Sky Player but then you can do that for the iPlayer etc. Having this on the 360 and PS3 is a good way for Sky to gauge usage and unique viewers for their On Demand offering. If you have a Sky Subscription this could only be a good thing for you!

iplayer has garbage content most of the time. its only bbc stuff.

4OD is great. watched all the daredevils stuff and some amazing documentaries. one on the cold war and one on advanced black project military aircraft.

also has some great nick broomfield documentaires. a female serial killer one and the biggie/tupac one. also has generation kill. even bbc didnt host the wire at all after it had been on (same makers)

has great content.

Have to agree with you there svd, iPlayer is good for those that missed Eastenders or the like, for me there really isnt much that I watch on the BBC nowadays.

Now if they could get HBO on Live then I would happily pay $100 a year for the service (wishful thinking though).

i dont like biggie or tupac. in fact, there isnt a tune one of them has made that i like, and i dont follow rap.

a good documentary is a good documentary. doesnt matter the subject if it is well done.

i liked the black project one better by a defense expert. very interesting. tells you about a plane that can do mach 8. and the lockheed blackbird jet that can do mach 3 (launched in 1964!) that outruns rockets. technology is far beyond what people actually know about.

Balls to Sky Sony, do a deal with LoveFilm for us UK clients.

Smile

Sony have enough movie companies etc under their belt to provide plenty of content and variety. f**k Sky, cut out the middle man and bring it directly to the PS3.

The BBC iPlayer is written for the Adobe Flash player so has no trouble working on the PS3. It can't run natively on the Xbox 360 because that device doesn't have the Flash player built in (or a Web browser for that matter).
The Sky player on the other hand is written to use Microsoft's Silverlight player (if I am not mistaken). In my opinion this is a huge mistake by Sky because it severely limits who can use their player. Flash is now on 99% of all internet enabled desktop computers in the world (figure as of Sept 2009). I can't see the Silverlight player coming any time soon to the PS3 as Microsoft just wouldn't want to give away that feature to 'the competition'. Unless Sky have a version of the player written to run under Flash or a bespoke version written for the PS3 (unlikely if they are in bed with MS) then its just not going to happen. It is a real shame as I would love to use the Sky player and regularly use the BBC iPlayer for all sorts of content (documentaries, comedies, dramas etc).
Sky saying they are 'neutral' about how people access their content isn't quite true. 'Neutral' as long as you can run Microsoft's proprietary software.

Sky on 360? For another monthly fee? RIIIIIIIIIIIPPPPPPPPPPPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOFFFFFFFFFFFFF!!!!

Sky on Ps3? For a single monthly fee?

less of a RIIIIIIIIIPPPPPPPOOOOOOOOOOOOFFFFFFFFFFFF!

iplayer is amazing on PS3 now, bbc/sony have done really well with it. it looks like you are watching it on playtv the quality was never that good a few months ago
HyperH on 28 Oct '09
i dont see the problem. ive had my ps3 for nearly 2 years and ANYTHING i want to watch i can find on my web browser for FREE. If documentaries ur thing try documentary-log.com or topdocumentaryfilms.com you (plenty covering all subjects there) or if films are your thing try watch-movies.net (older films are better quality opposed to newer ones filmed in the cinema) And theres pretty much a free site for every tv series,eg watchsimpsonsonline.net with every series (including the new one showing in the states) or try freeonlineepisodes.net for a list of series. not really into sports but try footdr.com (or something like that) had watched west brom last season but had a chinese comentator lol point is i can't remember the last time i watched tv, or saw a comercial break which is a plus in my eyes and all i pay for is my net. good times.
