No dedicated Aliens vs Predator servers?

"Running an operation like that is monumentally expensive," says Rebellion
You've probably already read up the wealth of controversy surrounding Modern Warfare 2 ditching PC dedicated servers. And historically AvP is a big PC game. So is Rebellion going to do the right thing by its community? EA is with Bad Company 2, reports Edge.

When asked outright if there'll be dedicated servers, senior producer David Brickley began, "This is a title that we want to support for a long time to come. If it's not been announced yet then certainly the PC version will benefit from Direct X 11 features. That's one thing we can use to make sure that people who invest in the hardware will get the absolute best.

"And it was originally a PC title so you can imagine the heritage and the need within Rebellion itself to make sure that people who still play and talk of that game are not left behind."

When asked again if there'll be dedicated servers, Brickley, continued, "Well the one thing we can say is obviously running an operation like that is monumentally expensive. For the period the original was up, people who played that game got an incredible experience.

"You know what the internet's like. We're obviously used to getting things for free over the years. I guess on our side the thing we're focusing on is whatever your set-up at home, you get the best possible experience from it. We're just trying to use our time and resources wisely."

And when asked one last time if it's a 'yes or no' on the dedicated servers, Brickley said, "As I said the game is still quite a way from release so I guess there are other things to be determined during that time."

To our ears that sounds like more of a 'no' than a 'yes'. Read the full AvP interview and don't forget to check out our huge AVP hands-on.

Round 2 here we go! Mad

Think I'll go cancel my pre-order now and wait to see what the final reviews have to say before I decide whether I truly want to pick this one up or not afterall. "Colonial Marines" anyone?
The_KFD_Case on 27 Oct '09
What exactly is meant by dedicated servers here? Servers that Rebellion themself are maintaining? This is not necessary. All they need to do is make sure 3rd parties can host dedicated servers.
Mogs on 27 Oct '09
cutting your nose off to spite your face there a little too much i think.

He hasn't said yes or no either way becasue they obviously haven't come to that hurdle yet, and giving an answer either way could be potentially damaging to the sales of the game, what with how knee jerk the whole world seems to have become lately.

I'm going to put my money down on this whatever. becasue if its half as good as the original was even in single player its going to be one hell of a game.

Quick quick, petition time!

Let me get this striaght, PC Games are generally a good bit cheaper than their console counter parts, PC Games are given the opportunity to mod the Game (generally) how they want to, PC Games usually have the best graphics and controls (although that is debatable) and what is the last point im going to make? Oh thats right, PC Games dont sell as much as their console counter parts but of course they should get dedicated servers and whatever else they PC Gamers want!

The times they are a changing.

This question is going to be asked to every developer now making a game with an online portion. I am already sick of the question. You can be sure that if a non-dedicated server route is successful(money-making wise), more and more companies with adopt the plan.
kimoak on 27 Oct '09
What a crock, extremely expensive blah blah blah. Dedicated servers dont have to be hosted professionally by the publisher( ala Ranked dedicated servers for Battlefield 2 and the likes ), all they need to do is provide seperate files to run the servers so we the consumers can decide to run them on a dedicated machine on a Lan or on a paid for dedicated server, not some crocky local server like CoD: MW 2 which will only allow a max of 6x6 or 8x8 in game unless you have an insanely fast 100Mb/sec connection to your home lol.

Congrats on squashing a whole lot of dumb into a small space StonecoldMC.

PC games are cheaper because the platform maker isn't taking a cut, so the margin for the publisher is the same.

Modding PC games, if anything, is a benefit to the industry - just look at how many modding projects have gone on to be released commercially.

PC games have the best graphics... yes. So? They also cost at least twice what a console costs.

We should get dedicated servers because we're the consumer and its what we want. As already pointed out, dedicated servers don't need to cost a company anything. If your a green-eyed console kiddy then start standing up for yourself, doing so has served pc gamers well.

Must say I agree with a lot of that, even though I do not PC game much nowadays (bored of WoW now). The dedicated servers along with the community made content really made PC gaming a great experience. It benefited the publishers as they usually sold more copies off of the back of the fan/community made mods etc. P2P solution does seem a bit of a cop out to me but then again I dont run the game servers. Cool

Exactly, case in hand, Battlefield 2 is still selling copies and still has ~15,000( 13,500 playing at the moment http://www.game-monitor.com/search.php?vars=&game=bf2 ) from 104,000 registered gamers, 4 and a half years after it has been released, this is due to mods/dedicated servers and EA/DICE patching with new maps etc.
lmimmfn on 27 Oct '09
I think what companies and developers here need to realise is to say their words carefully. Right now there is a huge thing going on with MW2 which as most will know is about no dedicated servers full stop. However I do think if the developers said we won't be providing the dedicated servers and they will have to be third party then things would be a lot better. After all they clearly stated in that interview that the game was played long after release but I suspect part of that reason was due to dedicated server support.

Anyway my final point being that developers can drop their own dedicated servers to an extent but being lazy and not bothering to include that support for third parties will be a bad move for the industry and one which will surely spark moree outcry than with MW2 in the long run. I just hope Rebellion and EA don't drop dedicated servers dull stop because I am rather looking forward to these two games.

Hardly fair to come into this section and rant and rave with your fanboyish critisms about our industry. Which is afterall what kicked off gaming and without us you certainly wouldnt be playing your console games.

You say pc games do not sell as many copies as their console counterparts and yet a pc only game, Empire Total War nearly made number one in the charts when it came out. Also on this subject console counterpart I am assuming means your console sales vs pc sales which hardly seems fair to me considering you have 3 consoles to our one platform.

PC gaming is generally also speaking a more mature platform and is still growing even now.

I understand that a lot of what i said was inflammatory (and i might have been on the wind up a little bit as well Smile ) but it does seem to mean that everytime we hear about a PC news story it is about a pettition being set up or a backlash for something.

I do understand why everyone is angry, something that you are used to is being taken away from you, unfortunatley that is the way the world is going nowadays, you dont get anything for free and if a company (Activision, especially) feel they can make /save money you bet there going to follow through with it.

Sorry if I annoyed anyone but one thing is true from my first post. The times they are a changing.

I agree completely that the times are changing and developers are changing tactis but without making them listen to the consumer and stopping them from making bad mistakes they will change the industry for worse rather than for good. I can see now where you are coming from but as Atlas wrote we care for what we believe in and as such we like to take a stand against anything which could threaten our industry.

That's right: Suck up the mediocre product you get and pay extra for it! By all means, be a sucker. One is born every minute after all. Never mind that you forgot to mention how publishers intentionally gimp PC games in a futile attempt to curb piracy, which incidentally also exists on various consoles, in ways that very well may violate customer rights and invariably harm the paying customers and not the pirates. I'll be a monkey's god damned uncle before I help fund that particular display of monumental stupidity.

While PC games often do not sell as much as their console counterparts it isn't always the case, and much as some console owners may loathe it they need the PC to drive hardware and software development which eventually filter down to them. The reverse is not true. Furthermore, just imagine how much more satisfying and fair your console experience could be if just a fraction of the console boys and girls managed to organize the way the PC crowd at times does (although it could certainly still improve). Empower yourself. The companies sure as hell won't do it for you.

Anyhow, I'm content with the knowledge that my money is the real leverage in this equation each potential customer has with the publishers and developers. As already stated, they have to prove to me that their product is worth my time and money. Not the other way around. Smile

That would effectively kill the online PC experience. In a perverse way it's similar to introducing a WWI truck that goes 2 km per litre to that of a modern MAN truck with all the bells and whistles. What's truly laughable is how some gamers are heralding it as one of the greatest things since sliced bread! LaughingRolling Eyes

It's all down to economics chaps, and these days the old Pc ain't bringing in the big bucks like it used to.

But don't let that stop any of you from giving game publishers/developers a hard time, it's not like they have another two much more lucrative platforms they can publish their games on instead. Rolling Eyes

Watching the two latest victims of assclown-ism brings to mind the old saying, "If you can't laugh at yourself, whom can you laugh at"? The obvious answer is of course, "Others"! It's so good of you two to volunteer. I bet it just eats you up having to acknowledge that your precious consoles are the beggars that eat the crumbs off the floor from the PC's development banquet. Economics indeed, Ted! Last time I checked the PC market vastly outnumbered all of the console markets combined...Or did you forget the hundreds of millions of work PCs that help fuel the economies that allow various people to buy the simpler consoles? WinkLaughing
The_KFD_Case on 27 Oct '09
I think these console noobs have things the wrong way around, last year the PC made more money than any of the consoles( it was slightly behind in the NDP info( at .7 billion if i remember correctly ), but that excludes digital downloads which is huge in the PC world and the billions generated from WoW and other MMO's like Eve etc. )

KFD, I may be a Fanboy but I am a Fanboy of Games, not platforms. I dont think you can say the same about yourself.

In your earlier posts you comment on "if just a fraction of the console boys and girls managed to organize the way the PC crowd at times does", are we really boys and girls? Not big Men and Women like yourself? And then you say "Watching the two latest victims of assclown-ism brings to mind the old saying, "If you can't laugh at yourself, whom can you laugh at"? You have an almighty chip on your shoulder, probably a 5588 or whatever the newest bit of kit is and you cant see that your platform has gotten smaller and smaller over the last few years. Why dont NPD or VGChartz track PC sales, most probably because they are insignificant apart from a few stellar franchises.

Cant speak for Ted but I used to Game on the PC many many years ago and I just got tired of it, couldnt get the Games I wanted, fed up with having to buy new cards and upgrading my machine. So I changed to consoles, exclusivley, and personally I havent looked back since.

I dont moan much with regards to Gaming (cause im having Fun on my console), can you say the same?

I'm all for fighting the corporate fat cats having it large. We have to do something to stop this charge for anything and everything mentality.

EDIT: I'm not saying we should get stuff for free, I just don't like the way we are being charged more and are getting less or something more restrictive like lack of dedicated servers.

Stone, you lost all credibility when you came in to a PC thread and started talking smack about the PC while cheering on the consoles. If you really were a "Gamer" the way you rattled on about then why the previous provocations? Pot. Kettle. Black.

Personally I rather enjoy keeping abreast of new hardware developments in PC gaming. I'm no "guru" by any means (I suspect Imimmfm is more your guy for that level of expertise,) but I am familiar enough with PC specs that I'm comfortable perusing hardware for my PC. It needn't be all that difficult nor intimidating. Nor does it have to burn a massive hole in your wallet either.

As for having a massive chip on my shoulder, perhaps you should look to yourself and ask what exactly it was that made you feel the need to ridicule tens upon tens of thousands of PC gamers whom are actually willing to stand up and be counted on matters that pertains to them which they do not approve of? A touch of envy perhaps?

Now regarding having fun with gaming, why yes, I have fun with both my PC and my Xbox 360! Yet there is no question which of the two kits leaves the other in the dust. Hint: It's not the console. My console does a fine job of entertaining me game wise, but try to deny it as you may, the PC leads the way and the consoles follow. This seems likely to continue. If you are in doubt as to why this is, simply answer me this: On which platform are the console and PC games developed?

Now perhaps you should consider returning to console land. You may find that you will be happier there.

I thought Rebellion started the franchise on Atari Jaguar? There must be a more serious financial issue behind the curtain as devs wouldnt want to p8ss off the community so easily.

As long as the PS3 port is ace, delivers a solid campaign and multi-player, then I'm there.

KFD, im not going to get into a long winded debate about this. I saw the article on CVG about Rebellion possibly not having dedicated servers for the Game and was going to see what the comments were like. You were the first one there saying that you would cancel your pre order and now probably go for Colonial Marines instead, that alone kind of annoyed me.

Rebellion are going to try and make the best Game they can and you will not buy the Game because it has no dedicated servers, my first post was a rather backhanded compliment to the PC; cheaper Games, more mods, dedicated servers, yet PC Gamers are still not happy and will now no longer buy this Game.

And if were talking 'provocations' I managed to see the post you made intitially, you know that really nice one, but being the PC Gamer you managed to pull it completley. Nice.

I wasnt going to get into a wall of text debate but it looks like a did, sorry people. If you look at my second post I actually apologise if I p**sed anyone off and admit to being on the wind up a bit, you ignore this and continue to have a go. Nice.

From here on in, im not going to comment on PC Game stories, hopefully that way you can moan about the Games coming out (not coming out) with no console kids to annoy you.

Nice.

This is where we listen to the world's smallest violin and it's playing for you, Stone.

Just out of interest, whose 'we'? The rest of the Brigade?

And if your playing the violin can I get a request? Symphony No. 9 in E Minor, Second Movement Excerpt by Dvorak. Its a pesonal fave, thanks.

Since this is a public forum, yes, "We" refers to anyone whom comes across this thread. Feel free to invite your hordes of Xbots and SDF fanboys. The more the merrier and what not.

I think I'll select a more fitting adaptation of Master P's "Be My Bitch". The selected music should fit the material at hand, no?

Classy! Just post the the comment you did last night before you took it off, that summed up how you feel perfectly.

thats a no.

yet another brilliant trend activision has set.

matching making doesnt belong on the pc. pc users dont need simple 'play multiplayer' buttons and the rest is done for you.

p2p multiplayer was a disgrace on ps3 COD4.

console users got by fine on warhawks servers. match making over p2p is to save a quick buck. makes for a poorer experience. saying everyone expects everything on the internet to be free is not an excuse.

you make the game, you support the f**ker.

i was going to buy MW2 on pc, now there is no chance. i think i may pick on the first game for cheap and wait for bad company 2.

Aye, but no less classy than having the audacity to claim to be a "Gamer" that is more concerned about fun than the platform right after having lambasted an entire gaming platform. Now that speaks volumes about which class you belong to, Stone (the word "peasantry" comes to mind). Hypocrisy is never in short supply where it concerns you, is it? Now, are you going to honour your earlier promise of skulking away from the PC threads or are you going to continue proving that you are about as honourable as you are a true "Gamer"? Wink

I think everyone needs to sit around the camp fire and sing the world famous camp song:

"Oh, give me my home
With its comforts and foam,
With a stove and a show'r and some lights;
Where seldom at all do you trip up and fall,
Where the stars are not needed for lights.
Home! Give me my home!
Without snakes and the ground's not so hard.
Where Mom cooks and slaves
And takes care of my days,
While I sleep or I play in the yard."

Sadly that is actually a camp song Crying or Very sad

Hear, hear! And as others have mentioned, Rebellion needn't actually pay for dedicated servers; they just need to make sure that the game supports that setup and leave the rest to third parties.

Thanks for sharing, Lonewolf, however I have no interest in sitting down with some of the present company. Quite the contrary; I have absolutely no problem giving as good as I get and then some. The one whom is most dedicated wins. Let them do their worst; they shall fall short and be found lacking like others who came before them.

Loving your vocabulary KFD, 'peasantry'? Genius.

If this is my last PC thread I might as well make the most of it. Im not lambasting the platform KFD, im lambasting the users of said platform, in particular, yourself.

Why dont you just re post the comment you did last night and be done with it, ive only asked you about 3 times! Or would that blow your cover as a mature, intelligent and eloquent poster. Get down off your high horse and re post it, give us all a laugh!

You seem to be under the illusion that I owe you something. Let me cure you of that particular illusion right here, right now: I don't. Incidentally, would now be a bad time to point out that you going after PC gamers makes you guilty of all the the negative things you chastise the PC gamers, and other console gamers for on occassion, too? I imagine it doesn't do wonders for the martyr's card you are attempting to play right now, Stone. Or perhaps it would blow your cover of being a "Gamer" that is focused on the fun factor? As stated previously, hypocrisy doesn't seem to be far away where it concerns you.

Now, are you going to be a man and stand by your earlier statements or are you going to catfoot about like the gutless wonder your recent posts increasingly have revealed?

Take all the time you need to get back to me on that one.

Me going after PC Gamers Laughing ?

Watch out PC Gamers, im after you!!!

Im going to leave this thread here, hope everyones had Fun reading the hilarity between myself and KFD, I know I have!

You are on a crusade KFD, of that there is no question, anyone who doesnt toe the PC line and agree with everything you say is instantly a 'little boy', 'peasantry', 'ass clowns', 'gutless wonder' and then the pièce de résistance implying that I was your 'bitch'. Nice.

I just wish I could have saved that comment you made last night before you deleted it (quite right to delete it to, I wouldnt want my name associated with that kind of bile either) it puts all these other comments I mentioned above to shame and the fact that you havent even acknowledged it no matter how many times I ask, tells its own story.

Keep on Crusading KFD, out of all the things in the world to get angered by and demand justcie for, yours is most worthy.

Toodles hypocrite! The pleasure has been all mine; whom could forget the verbal tap-dancing you engaged in? I'd be running from that stain too, if I were you, Stone. Delightfully I am not.

Now, before you exit left, here's a free piece of advice: If you don't want to meet dedicated resistance in a PC thread perhaps you would do well to consider that opening up with a one-size-fits-all ridiculing provocation is perhaps not the best way to initiate a civilised discussion/debate. You don't have a leg to stand on, on this particular occasion and thus I have no sympathy for the crocodile tears you've been crying. Good riddance and don't let the door hit you on the way out.

No. It was The KFD Case, talking about Games on a gaming forum.

And what is life if not a game? Granted, a game where the stakes may be somewhat higher than the games we play on various screens and monitors. Perhaps if you were just to make a bit of effort, you would be able to apply the quoted statement to other facets of existence. If you can't, well, your loss. Not mine.

As for the post I removed and replaced with a more conciliatory tone, why Stone, I was extending a courtesy to you and yet you had the poor form not to return it. Shame on you old boy, however, if you are so insistent upon bringing up what was removed, then by all means! Quote me if you can, and then please do as it stated which incidentally would also finally see you being true to your word about vacating this thread. Ah! But that would require you being true to your word; an unlikely event judging from your behaviour since you entered this thread.

Oh, and Stone, you have failed - not me, but yourself. You have shown yourself to be exactly that which you have criticized others for which means (as stated previously,) that you have no credibility. You've dug your own grave to lie in. All I had to do was give you the push off.

A most sorry state of affairs, yet one that the PC gaming community brought upon itself in all probability.

Much as I was jesting when I said it was the pirates who were crying the loudest, I'm sure that they must be at least part of the reason why this is becoming ever more popular a decision from the developers.

Why else would they change the format so drastically in the face of such uproar...there must be some reasoning for them to do so? Confused
