The Golden Joystick Awards always spawn a few surprise winners. The ShortList One to Watch award winner isn't one of them.
That's because, of course, we've all got our eyes firmly planted on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Assassin's Creed 2, came close, along with Final Fantasy XIII, Half Life 2: Episode 3 and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.

Whereas I'll be picking up "MW2" second-hand in order to deny Activision and IW my money directly. Failing that I'll simply leave this game by the wayside.

I was half expecting it to be "Dragon Age: Origins", but then recalled that it has apparently not been garnering a whole lot of attention outside the RPG afficianados camp.

That really surprises me to be honest. I am really looking forward to it if not for the detail more than anything. MW2 - what exactly is there to watch out for, we all know what it is about...

true dat, a man after my own heart.
oh i'll get it eventually, from a bargin bin in a year or so. Unless activision somehow succeed in their money grubbing ways and buy every retailer out there and outlaw second hand games!
your all going to buy it (MW2) sometime or other and when u do the money will stilll go to activison cause you will be just reimbursing the shop who has reimbursed the gamer who brought it originally. Why moan about a game your not going to buy??? B.T.W. in my opinion you should never trust anyone who plays or owns any final fantasy games, bunch of comic book guys. Bring on the warfare!!!

The point you seem to be missing is that if I, and others, were initially going to buy the game, then that would mean X amount of first hand copies bought at full price. Now, if on the other hand, we decided to buy X amount of second hand copies of that same game, that means Activision and IW have only benefited from the first sale. All other subsequent sales do not earn them any money. The money goes to other private individuals or retail stores and thus I won't be support Activision and IW; this is also likely one of the main reasons why various companies would like to shut down the second hand market. As for warfare...The war is already here and I for one intend to give Activision a proper fight on its hands!
i will be picking this up on day 1 so what its 5 quid more....just hope it dont open the gates for others to follow
If you are not willing to back up your hope with measurable action then your hope has even less of a chance of coming to fruition. It is however each individual's choice; just remember to send a friendly thought of thanks to those of us whom stood up for all of our collective rights down the road, won't you?

The point you seem to be missing is that your feeble tactic just makes you feel like your making a statment, very Ghandi of you but utterly pointless. Devs have known this goes on since day dot. Do you really think if you make your "stand" and buy it 2nd hand or even 1st hand in 8 months time that the sale would even matter when they will be selling bucket loads of guitar hero 456 or whatever???? times move on so quick unless EVERYONE boycotts it totally (and i very much doubt they will) then it will be a success and you will of cut off your nose to spite your face.....unless you do believe that its a totally unrealistic price and not worth buying then dont buy it and wait...point being they are mainly catering to there hardcore following and as such i wouldnt bet against it being top of the charts week after release. why dont you make a stand against something worthwhile like the N.W.O. or would that be just as pointless?
b.t.w. if it wasnt for the second hand market there would be a MASSIVE drop in 1st hand sales eg, how many people do you know take games into a shop and walk out with money?? not many unless they are broke. No they take in games they nolonger play (idlle assett) and get a new game which usually is brand new and a sale unit is born. if you really want to see money from nothing i suggest you look into fractional banking and then you will see numbers and money are not worth the paper there written on.
I don't see why you're all complaining, personally im really looking forward to it, if its anything like cod4. btw, did any of you notice in the vidio that the washington monument looks like an exact copy of the one in fallout? kinda irrelavent but still

Did you actually think through your so-called "argument" above? What you are saying is that some people choosing not to buy the game first hand in no way impacts the bottom line of the publisher/developer. That's just flat out incorrect. Even if just a single person chooses not to buy the game first hand at retail price, then that is a lost full retail sale for Activision/IW. Multiply that by however many individuals are going to adopt the same tactic and the companies involved may see a decrease in profits ranging from the hundreds of thousands to millions of pounds if the signed petition is any indicator. That this game will likely still sell very well and make a lot of money isn't something I dispute, but be aware that even if it does well it won't do as well as it could have, and that's the point!
What you are arguing is essentially that if you had 5 apples, but end up only selling 4 of them then you haven't lost any sales which is clearly incorrect when the fifth apple wasn't a sale although it could have been. No matter how large or small the amount of lost sales, they are still lost sales and negatively impact the bottom line of the companies involved, and that is ultimately what every business cares about the most; if they don't then they won't be in business for very long.
UPDATE: I just read on several online websites that Activision/IW has struck a deal with Valve to use Steamworks. I'm guessing that means registering the game on Steam, in which case second hand sales of the PC version are worthless. Guess I won't be playing this game at all unless I happen to see it for a fiver or a tenner in a discount bin somewhere, someday.
b.t.w. if it wasnt for the second hand market there would be a MASSIVE drop in 1st hand sales eg, how many people do you know take games into a shop and walk out with money?? not many unless they are broke. Except the point isn't about whether another person makes money off of selling a game second-hand. I don't care whether they make a profit or not as long as their asking price is one I consider attractive for the goods in question. What you just stated above proves the point about second hand sales not benefiting the original publisher/developer since any game or cash exchanges stay between the retailer and/or the private individuals in question. Thus, if I do decide to pick up "MW2", it will be second hand since it denies Activision/IW my money.
As for the value of currency, why yes, in some cases it literally isn't worth the paper it's printed on (Zimbabwe's dollar for example). Money is essentially nothing more than a symbol of the given nation's people's ability to produce goods and services. It is a system that inherently rests on trust in a people's ability to produce items and services of value; now throw in trade balances (export vs. import, etc.) and things get a bit more muddled but that is the essence of money: trust in the perceived value of it.
I don't see why you're all complaining, personally im really looking forward to it, if its anything like cod4. btw, did any of you notice in the vidio that the washington monument looks like an exact copy of the one in fallout? kinda irrelavent but still
Oh I was very excited about "MW2's" upcoming release. Then IW showed it's hand regarding their duplicitous ploy at controlling the online multi-player system, which in this case goes backwards in terms of development compared to the current standard of multi-player setups for the PC crowd. That this decision was probably already made months ago and then only revealed three weeks before launch hasn't exactly helped perceptions of the crap shoot this is. Sure, I could buy it for the Xbox 360 yet I am not going to handicap my controls of a FPS that was meant for the PC with a gamepad, nor do I relish the thought of paying even more for the same game thanks to higher console prices.
if you take your apples example say i was to produce the 5 apples at a total cost to me including all labour and materials of say 10p an apple that would equate to me needing to make 50p to break even. But im in it to make a profffit so i sell my apples for 20p now i stand to double my money.now i know my apples wont stay on the shelf long because they have a sell by date (or people think im charging too much), now say that ive been doing this for 20 years and know i sell on average 4 apples sometimes 3 sometimes 5, that would give me an average return of 80p sometimes 60p sometimes Ł1 but if you notice i never fallout of proffitt. Now people are always going to want apples and if they like my brand enough they will pay for it all ive got to know is roughly how many i need to sell to stay in proffit and adjust my expenditures to match. This neglects to mention my proffitts on my bananas and pairs which will soak up any losses on said apples if they went pair shape
but at the end of the day it comes down to a overall company proffit and assets that dictate share prices so aslong as the figures go up everyones happy. like in poker potential is exactly that.. nothing concrete just an asperation

See, you just proved my point yet again. The fact remains that any loss you have is still a loss at the end of the day. So no matter how many units you sell, you still aren't selling as many as you could have previously. The problem for you in this case, is that you are trying to defend a fallacy, which stipulates that a previous guaranteed sale that is now lost, is not a loss at all. That is patently false.
b.t.w looked on asda the page comes up for a split second then vanishes but it says they will be selling it for Ł44.92
For which platform? Personally if I'm not playing it on the PC, I'm not playing it at all...And given Activision/IW's recent actions that appears increasingly unlikely to take place anytime soon, if ever.
"MW2" for the PC can be had for 34.96 quid from Amazon, and for 34.99 from ShopTo. Depending on where you live shipping costs may apply on top of those figures.
not everyone likes that type of game, especially when its the same as the last one, which was the most overrated game in existence..and not everyone plays online either.
..and regarding second hand sales, you do know that the rrp of MW is still Ł39.99 2 years later? Can you blame people for getting it cheaper when they can? Does it affect the sales of new games? Yes, insiders constantly bitch about it..but until they learn that a good game is not made with a massive budget every time they will still make people pay what they think they can get. It's business as people have rightly said. Only way to make them understand that they're making people pay too much is by not buying the games.
Here in Spain, games are 70€, and considering the near parity with the pound thats Ł70. Sure you can buy them from Amazon in the UK, but by then its Ł47. Much better than the 70..but still. Anyway my point is that if you let them dictate the market, they will and the consumer will suffer like they do here.
oh and Moss, take you bulls**t about comic books somewhere else until you know what you're talking about...Garth Ennis' War comics would make your eyes bleed.
listen im not going to go on about this but its clear u cant grasp the concept of proffit/loss. i understand where your coming from where in if i havent sold every item im selling then those are lost sales but regardless of a greedy mentality things dont work like that, the lost are covered by the actual. i know u wont understand this but BECAUSE people shoplift the price of items goes up to compensate for losses. so in your theory your fighting a loosing battle buying 2nd hand and even helping them raise prices. I buy containers of ex argos stock for roughly 5-10% of retail. I can do this because of the way it works. Every 2 seasons they have new stock lines and older stock lines are auctioned off in bulk to make space for the new stock. the cost of storage space outweighs the old products value plus they have already made their money back on the products sold instore. Point being you do have a point but sadly its on the wrong end of your pencil. And its kinda worrying that u cite Zimbabwe currency when britan and the us both have fiat currencies too. money is nolonger backed by gold or silver but by goverments which makes it as trustworthy as monopoly money. Only about 3% of money in circulation is legal tender the rest is numbers bouncing around computers.......sorry wrong meeting getting abit sidetracked. just enjoy what you want to and dont worry about wether devs sleep at night cause theyve just spent there next advance on a nice new waterbed. POP GOES THE WEASEL
lmfao i DO apologise jazzy i accidentally added an extra f, suppose that makes me dyslexic.....wait a minute your the one who got offended by me saying comic book guys are up themselves and think everyone else is obtuse. hmm thank you for proving my point and if you got nothing constructive i suggest you go sit in a corner and finish your pretty pictures book. plenty of one line sentences there.
There you go, rally the troops. Unfortunately for you I'm more than aware of what you were trying to argue, yet the problem for you - as previously stated - is that you are arguing from a false premise. No matter how you try and twist or turn it that doesn't change. If you go into this debate with a falsehood, you aren't going to to come out of it with a winner. Try again.

What was that about being up oneself? Do the words, "Pot. Kettle. Black" mean anything to you, Moss? Apparently it bothers you that there are those of us whom do not intend to purchase this game. How exactly is that a problem for you? On the one hand it doesn't affect your freedom to choose whether to buy it or not, and on the other hand, if we are to believe your dubious math, it won't affect overall sales of the game either in which case there really is nothing for you to worry about. Or is there? Kindly stop being an apologist that labours under the misguided notion that by adopting playground bully tactics, you can somehow "persuade" those of us whom don't share your point of view to adopt it.
Now, perhaps you should slither off and attach yourself to the bottom-side of a rock, much like the substance your moniker honours.
Try reading one some time..you may learn to spell... i never suggested you were dyslexic, there's nothing wrong with that.
and don't jump to conclusions about my reading habits...it makes you look like an idiot. I could say that by being obsessed with games which involve shooting people meant that you were more likely to pull a columbine..but i'd be wrong (i hope).
And you continue to prove you know nothing about comic books...congratulations for digging yourself deeper.
look going to keep this short and sweet 1.I have no idea how im proving your point when your totally missing mine. 2.I read a hell of alot more than probably you do (factual/biogs never fantasy) because fantasy/scfi i find it just a time killer i.m.o and would much rather spend my downtime in more constructive ways. 3.kfd stands for Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease, or histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis, it is a benign and self-limited disease that mainly affects young women...those in glass houses and all that. 4.when youve witnessed someone being blown apart infront of you your comics seem very dull indeed. each to there own but you both live insuch a self righteous mindset you cant see the wood for the trees. right what you like now im finished trying to educate pork i wont respond to anymore statments made, your more than welcome to the last word. my self ego doesn't need bolsterin. failing that u could always make a list of other things your too cheap to buy even though you really want

Let's keep this short 'n sweet indeed:
1. You claiming that a lost sale has no impact because of other sales is false. Why? Because no matter how many other sales are made they will never amount to the same figure as they would have had you combined the lost sale(s) and all the other sales. Way to fail basic math.
2. Speculation. You have no way of empirically knowing how much Jazzy reads, nor exactly what he reads in what amounts at present time.
3. Cute, but wrong again. Following my previous comment that your moniker honours the growth by the same name - unless you care to deny this? - I'm thrilled to point out that KFD are my intials and thus honour me.
4. More speculation. Whether you have, or have not, seen a body blown apart is unverified at this time. As is the type of body (i.e. watching a cat's body detonate is not the same thing as watching a human body do the same)...Oh, and for pointers, I have seen dead bodies - some in their own pools of blood, others tied down with a stick and floating at the water's edge. I wonder, since you bring it up, have you served your country honourably? I have, amongst the myriad of other accomplishments I have to my name. What have you done? Again, what was that about being up oneself? The word "hypocrite" comes to mind when thinking of you.
5. As for education, apparently that is something you could use more of. Don't worry; you won't need to compete with me as I already have two university degrees. Oh, and as for pork, time for you to go back to tending your herd of swine. Birds of a feather flock together, and all that jazz (pun intended).
Now ive heard it all u really are a sheeple arnt u lmfao. b.t.w. university degrees just prove how your overall good at reciting from text thats all ohh and a good way of putting you into classic facist debt wage slavery, but your soo clever you already know that.
For If you wasn't so conceited you would of seen that i said PROBABLY read more than jazzy unfortunately as i spend much of my time reading and learning. can you see the difference? Your problem that you fail to grasp, is that other people do and have known their own minds and opinions longer than you have and you cant stifle it.
Opinions are just that opinions, don't use riddicule because you only have a rudimentary, sadly feeble understanding of economics and money. feeling this sorely about a GAME must hurt you psml.
P.S. I take it from your statement about honourably serving your country you think the only way to do that is in the army?? what a misguided fool you really are. A. A serviceman witnessing what you claim to have witnessed would have a hard time opening up to his family about the horrors let alone come on hear bringing it up so unnecessary so i dont believe you for a second. B. i really do think you should start learning things for yourself rather than tv and news cause with every little rant you compose makes you look even more ignorant than you already do. As i said earlier you cannot educate pork so your a lost cause
I actually have a masters in English Literature and a bachelors in Law so no...there is no way in hell you read more than i do unless you eschew all other forms of entertainment and work, but please don't let that colour your perception of my reading habits.
Most people like fiction because they like to escape from the mundane world they live in. Looking down your nose at people who like to relax with a Daniel Silva book or a Ed Brubaker comic, rather than spend their time reading 'the selfish gene' is rather pathetic.
And there is a lot more to comic books than science fiction and fantasy, 'queen and country' to name but one..and why would i want to watch someone get blown up in front of me? That is hardly something one would enjoy or be proud of.
I understand that you prefer action to actually story telling, but that doesn't give you the right to assume you know what you are talking about in regards to a medium which has just as much influence on modern storytelling as film.
And you seem to use less of the ego and more of the Id..but by all means enjoy yourself.
KFD: You've got two degrees and served your country? good lord man, do you ever sleep? Doing two degrees nearly killed me.
lol u know neither nothing about me nor asked. I grew out of comics judge dread etc etc when i was 12 and have never professed to be literate in the genre. I do however have a comic book store located next to me and on the whole the people who frequent the shop are the same as your acting. Feeling self important and smug about their own virtual achivements and whoever disagrees with their way of thinking is an idiot. well your intitled to your beliefs. People shouldnt be so self interested and care more for whats happening to the world they will leave behind for their kids.....b.t.w. not being funny never heard of queen and country but sounds very national socialist to me. Next youll be telling me ARBIET MACHT FREI
You just desribed yourself, you know nothing about me but assumed a lot. I was trying to explain why your belief that comic books should be frowned upon as being short sighted, nothing else. I only took from you that you were not interested in fiction due to your self professed 'love' of non fiction and biography.
Try looking up queen and country on google..by greg rucka. Look into something before you decide you know everything there is to be known about it. Its an extension of the 1979 television series called 'the Sandbaggers' I'm defending something I love..just as much as I'm sure you would defend your love of shooting people in the head in videogames.
Virtual accomplishments? I have two degrees...that isn't virtual and took a hell of a lot of hard work. Just because you don't know or understand it does not give you the right to sneer at me...which is what you are doing. I know people are scared of what they don't understand but thats just stupid.
As you say, you are entitled to your beliefs, but you don't seem capable of taking the other side of the argument into consideration. You make crass generalisations and seem to enjoy making fun of different social groups to yourself.
why copy everything i said idiot. its not my fault you think goverment sponsored education is the ONLY road to enlightenment you cretan, You want eternal pats on the back?. Why 'love' when i didn't say that pleb start constructing a decent arguement instead of taking your own self loathing and projecting it on others!!!! END OF CONVERSATION YOUR DOIN MY SWEEDE IN NOW
dont let the door hit you, where the good lord split you sheeple bleat bleat
Now ive heard it all u really are a sheeple arnt u lmfao. b.t.w. university degrees just prove how your overall good at reciting from text thats all ohh and a good way of putting you into classic facist debt wage slavery, but your soo clever you already know that.

Right, so from that oh-so-enlightened post one may deduce the following:
1) You possibly possess an inferiority complex as witnessed by your knee-jerk reaction once higher education was mentioned. Incidentally, such reactionary behaviour is far more likely to lock you into a "fascist"-like vicious cycle of existence...but I'm sure you know all about that, don't you, Moss?
2) That you are not a man of your word since you are still here despite loudly proclaiming previously that it was to be your last word on this thread.
3) That spelling is not your forte.
4) That you have a habit of throwing suggestive statements out there alluding to greater achievement and service on your part than has actually been rendered, and yes, I am quite aware that there are many ways to serve one's country; being a pretentious cretin however, is not one of them.
5) Since you were the one to bring up the topic of seeing "bodies explode," I find it perversely ironic that you are suddenly the one calling foul when your so-called credentials are called in to question; if you can't stand the heat then get out of the kitchen. Oh, and for the record: I didn't specify when in my life I saw dead bodies. It was in fact before I was in the military. Which reminds me, you never did specify what type of bodies you say you witnessed explode nor when in your life it took place. Care to elaborate on that?
6) It appears that the fact that there are people whom are willing to stand up for themselves for whatever reasons and not buy this game bothers you more than your decision to buy the game bothers them/us. I wonder, what does that say about you?
7) Some of the above observations thankfully have cures for them (i.e. spelling is something one can learn)...That is if you aren't "pork", isn't that right, Moss?
I actually have a masters in English Literature and a bachelors in Law so no...there is no way in hell you read more than i do unless you eschew all other forms of entertainment and work, but please don't let that colour your perception of my reading habits.

KFD: You've got two degrees and served your country? good lord man, do you ever sleep? Doing two degrees nearly killed me.
Jazzy: Hehehe. On some days more than others. I will say this, being on 24-28 hour guard shifts with limited resting periods (and where you have to sleep in uniform without taking your boots off), coupled with many late nights during the university years (and afterwards,) probably hasn't done wonders for my sleeping habits.
Speaking of the university years, where are the months long summer vacations when you need them in regards to the plethora of appealing games already out, about to come out, and/or not too far off in the future?!
lol u know neither nothing about me nor asked.
The part in bold is something we can agree on. Whether we will agree as to how we go about achieving that may be another story. The devil is in the details, as the saying goes. Paradoxically you are exhibiting many of the same negative qualities that you are busy lambasting Jazzy and I with. A quarrel is started over the issue of some of us not supporting the same game that you are and yet you want to look to the future (for which I applaud you)? Looks to me like there is a looong way to go....
yes indeed theres along way to go. i was simply stating how sales work. The value of a little plastic disc is pennies. Its what you get out of it personally that should be the deciding factor NOT CUTTING YOUR NOSE OFF TO SPITE YOUR FACE. and as for the rest of your well directed highlight reel of just my defensive posts without adding your own utterly obtuse childish i know you are but what am i rants, all i can say is lol if you think your fighting for people to pay less for entertainment in the future then you may aswell grab a bucket and jump on the titanic youve got more of a chance of saving that. Its over for 'Hardcore' gamers. The moneys in keeping mom and dad happy with their wii sports and air guitars, simple cheap graphics. not what is becoming and soon to be extinct fringe community of gamers wanting games to push envelopes. If people did just stop buying them then they wouldnt cry they'd lick there rather small wound and just stop investing in that genre and develop games for less politically motivated people. Then youll be able to tell your grandkids about the good old days before you came along with your petition and screwed up good games and left us with spongebob olympics...now you can sleep on that with your boots on in your university securicor hut... Post Script I don't know how you can attack someones spelling when your own grammar leaves alot to be desired
You are all over the place; jumping from one topic to another when your bluffs are called on a given topic. By all that you hold dear - whatever it may be - please, please at least try to engage in what is popularly known as "reading comprehension"! Again, you are just as guilty, if not more so, of the very things you try to label Jazzy, I and others with. You are a hypocrite, you are disingenuous and your attempts at lucid, succinct arguments lack all conviction. That you, with your demonstrated abilities in spelling (or lack thereof), attempt to lecture me on grammar is as hilarious as it is grotesque. You are a laughing stock and have been found wanting in both veracity and consistency.
you say im all over the place???? weird lol even with a head full of hallucinagenics i can't find where your coming from lol. your a very strange little man with absolutely no grounding in the immense by laws of commerce. I suggest you go back to watching zietguiest and dreaming of a world with no money and pat yourself on the back for fighting a good fight. lol no one else will

That would explain a lot.
Based upon your postings on this forum, whatever the extent my knowledge of commerce laws and practices, they are apparently hugely superior to yours. The mere fact that you fail to grasp that a lost sale is still a lost sale, and will ultimately detract from the possible attainable bottom line regardless of how many other copies are sold, is shocking and does not bode well for whichever other "gems" of financial knowledge you claim to have. You appear to be clueless on these matters to be frank.
As for patting oneself on the back, that's exactly what you have been doing from the get go. First it was about freedom and respect for others' opinions despite the fact that you had just proceeded to trash those very things for other people because their stance diverged from yours. Now it's about premature, self-congratulatory behaviour which you also engaged in before accusing others of it. See a pattern here, Moss? You are, and continue to remain, a hypocrite of such proportions that you are indeed "up yourself" as you so eloquently started this brouhaha with. We've come full circle and you are none the wiser, nor prettier, for it.
