Rockstar: GTA episodes were "plan from the beginning"

Niko's was supposed to be "small part of a much larger world"

GTA IV's two downloadable episodes were "part of the plan from the beginning", Rockstar North's Imran Sarwar says.

Speaking in an exclusive Episodes from Liberty City interview, the associate producer says Niko's story was designed intentionally "to make him feel like a small part of a much larger world."

He said: "Even at the end of his story, he's not the king of the town by any means. The idea was to use the episodes to reveal the rest of that world, to show some of the characters and events that were invisible to Niko and yet still had a bearing on events in his life."

On why Rockstar North didn't opt to put all three stories on one game, Sarwar said: "I think if we had it would have been impossible to focus on each separate aspect of gameplay properly, the stories and the gameplay are inextricably linked.

I’m going to watch Princess Robot Bubblegum on TV in GTA, I don’t know why, but I feel compelled to watch the insanity after that clip.

Without a doubt Liberty City is the Star of the show! Although it has a stellar supporting cast to boot as well.

You can see that the Devs watch a lot of HBO; The Wire; The Soppranos maybe even a little bit of Curb Laughing .

Got my points this afternoon and will be downloading the DLC as soon as i get home.

Pimping Dancing Disco Balls here I come Very Happy !

I'm sure they were always planned, but the 360 exclusivity wasn't.

Stop f**king complaining anyway, you get Agent! I'm going to download it as soon as I can find the points card I bought a couple of weeks back.

or possibly he's telling the turth, it makes a lot of sense. The names of the achievement that didn't make any sense about the trinity. Now does.

I'd be happy if the next GTA followed a similar trend. But please can we have one more episode following the irish family before the next GTA it'd be great.

Every company predetermines their DLC nowadays, so why should R* be any different? At least R* have the grace to give fans their money's worth.

However, please don't make any more DLC as I would love you to put all your efforts into making LA Noire, The Agent and GTA 5 arrive sooner, rather than later.

Thanks.

Don't forget Red Dead Redemption - can't wait to see that.

I actually think this is a great idea. It's clear that R* wanted Liberty City itself to be the true star of the show in GTA4, so adding backstories for supporting characters is a fantastic way to do that - making those storylines DLC makes perfect sense.

Has anyone seen this teaser pic in the manual for the boxed Liberty City stories that seems to hint at the next GTA? - apparantly, Liberty City is done for now, but it gives away a tiny part of what could be the cover of the next edition.

Glasgow Laughing ?

I could well imagine that - suicide runs into Easterhouse.

Nah, my personal thought (although it's probably just wishful thinking) is Vice City....it just seems a logical step.

If they were to come up with a new map and era - I read a great idea on EG where someone said Detroit in the late 60's....US muscle cars and Motown!

that is a great idea.

I wouldn't mind seeing one set in russia just after the end of communism as well. ex KGB man trying to make a new life as a hitman type stuff.

Detroit would be a great idea actually!!

The fact that R* North are a wee Scottish Developer though, I feel they owe to us and themselves to put Glasgow on the GTA Map, although if people were struggling to understand Little Jacob, what chance would they have with Wee Wullie The Chib Laughing ?

Laughing That would be excellent, i could go blow up my work in game which is just next to Easterhouse.

I have to agree that Vice City just seems the next logical place to visit. Plus it would bring back the best GTA character ever in Fernando Martinez. I have heard he's back in the "Episodes from Liberty City" disc via Vice Fm but us DLC users don't get this Crying or Very sad

In a recent interview with my local radio station with "Cousin Ed & Dima" from Rockstar, they suggest the content is definitely just a timed deal.

After a few minutes this was Rockstar's reply:

"I don't know entirely what I can talk about, but it's on Xbox. Microsoft came to us and said 'hey here is some money if you can bring the content to us FIRST"

"Yes I own a PS3 too and would love to see the content on PS3 eventually, but it's not up to me."
The response, "There is an email cirulating around the company that GTA 5 development will start soon, but it's not official just yet. Again something that isn't in my control."

so they were always going to do them. MS just swooped in for a timed exclusive it seems.

Yeah, plus Vice City seems to be most peoples favourite GTA.

It'd be great if they actually set it slightly earlier than the original - maybe late 70's. I would love to see what Vice City would look like using the GTA4 engine.....those sunsets would look great.

It's unlikely they could get Tommy back in, but it'd be great to see some of the other characters make a return.

We knew about the DLC before we even had a release date for the Game, did they not mention it around E3 a few years back?

This DLC, Mass Effect 1 & 2, L4D 1 & 2 and MGS4 are without a doubt the most annoying news stories that never ever ever ever seem to go away.

I blame the Bloggers. Burn the Bloggers Laughing !

I'd love the new GTA to be set in Madchester (late 80's/early 90's). The soundtrack would be awesome; The Smiths, Happy Mondays and The Stone Roses, to name but a few.

It'd probably be a bit on the grey side though..

Yeah, they could use dynamic weather effects.....

...erm, on second thoughts...

I may be wrong but from what i've read the radio station he DJ's is exclusive to the disc version. I hope i'm wrong and it ends up as an extra download or something cause he's been a part of every GTA up until his shocking ommission from part 4.

Don’t you just love completely unsubstantiated internet rumours portrayed as cold hard FACT! I’m going to download this later, I am going to play it, and I am going to like it. Then I’m going to think about March 2010.
