Left 4 Dead, which looked likely to run away with the gong, had to settle for second in the end. Behind that was Call off Duty: World at War, World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King and Grand Theft Auto IV.
In a way this doesn't surprise me. I think had L4D been more updated with new campaigns etc I would have been more inclined to vote for it myself. I can see L4D2 being close next year mind...
Agreed. There may be those whom disagree, yet personally I should think that it was always going to be a bit of a long shot for an expansion-sized intended-for-multi-player game to grab the GOTY award for the PC if faced with anything even resembling a decent and meatier PC game. When something the size of, and with an attention to detail like, "Fallout 3" - with or without the DLC content - crashes the party it's more or less "game over", IMO.
CoD: WaW in third place? What crazy people voted for that? It was nothing more than a CoD4 mod.
Also, although I have to agree that Fallout 3 is definately not just one of the best games of this/last year but also one of the best released in the past decade, I have to admit that I've gotten alot more playtime out of L4D, even if it does only have a limited selection of maps and modes. Fallout 3 deserves GoTY for the game it is, the story, content, gameplay etc, but L4D deserves it just for the replayability and pure fun it offers. Either way, I'd have voted for both if I'd have the option.
Has anyone actually listened to how poor the voice acting is in Fallout 3? These 'actors' are of a lower standard than your average daytime South American soap opera. I suppose voice acting isn't important when choosing a favourite or best game of the year. I would have thought a game that's considered 'Game of the Year' should be pretty outstanding in all areas. If anyone actually thinks the voice-acting in this game is amazing, or excellent, I'd be absolutely shocked (either by their dishonesty or utter lack of standards!).

I do somewhat agree with you. The voice acting wasn't exactly awe inspiring but that said I don't think many people think about that when considering how good a game is.

also, with so many different characters to interact with it is going to be harder and/or more expensive to get quality across the board. games with less npc to converse with or a complete lack of a conversation system will be less expensive to get done.
