Final Fantasy XIII will not use the traditional levelling-up system of most RPGs, Japanese mag Shounen Jump has revealed.
The game will instead employ a new system called the Crystalium System, according to Andriasang's translation. When you batter enemies you get Crystal Points which can be used to unlock new skills and abilities on a circular chart.

Unlocking new skills opens up new paths on the chart, giving you access to more skills when you earn enough points. Abilities can also be upgraded, as each characters' parameters are individually boosted to your liking.
Sounds similar to the Sphere Grid system in Final Fantasy X, which wasn't one of our favourites, but we'll keep an open mind for FFXIII, because it looks and sounds absolutely incredible.
If each character has different paths for skills it will be good. but if it is like FF10 and if u play the gamre enough every character will be the same apart from weapons. The best system was on FF8

I didn't like 8's for the simple reason that it made you weaker if you used magic.
It was a good attempt at something different but it made levelling up seem a bit pointless.
I wouldn't mind if another game used a similar system to Lost Oddysey, although it did have the problem that you could end up making very similar characters, much like FFX.
I wasn't a big fan of the sphere grid if I'm honest, mainly because if you took the wrong route of development for a character it could take ages to get back on track, on the other hand exp grinding played less of a role and actual tactics were needed, a nice change from the grind and bulldoze your way through method.
All up I'll reserve judgement, either way I'm still really looking forward to this game.
IMO FF8 had the best plot of the final fantasy series. Its characters were a more likeable. Except squall(then again most protagonists in JRPGS are pretty easy to loathe)
It's just a shame that it was marred by the junction system and having to live in the shadow of 7.
Conversely, VIII was my least favorite in the series, probably largely due the junction system. It had an amazing story but the battle system just became tedious to me. Also, Squall is the biggest emo ever written into a story. If they put voice acting in a remake most of his lines will be 'grunt' or 'hmph'. I reckon he cuts himself with his gunblade.
FFX was my second favorite after VII. I also loved the sphere grid system and I actually liked Tidus, who was a cool guy (although I appreciate that a lot of people loathe him). But on topic, the sphere grid was great (unless you tried the basic one), and if FFXIII is anything like it then it will succeed in my eyes. They also need to insert another laughing scene between Snow and Sarah *runs*.
10's system was my 3rd fav level up system, after 9's and the best obviously been the materia system in 7 =) but they can't go back to that. it's one of the things that make 7 stand out (and remain the best in the series even now). still, this sounds good, and i'm really lookin forward to 13 =D
i liked the spere grid system too. The only minor problem with it was that you could end up with quite similar characters.

Completely agree with both points. I thought the sphere grid was a brilliant idea in X, it allowed you to develop the characters how you wanted to and if you did it right you would only really have similar characters at the end of some serious grinding when everyone would practically have the whole grid filled in.
Well if there is one thing we can all agree on its that everyone has their own favorite Final Fantasy (assuming you like FF, otherwise why would you be reading this article?). For me it was FF-VIII. I quite liked the Junction system and the stackable spells, while GF's that everyone could summon were awesome, and the story & characters were great too (Agreed Squall was annoying like most FF lead characters.) I did like FF-X but the sphere system was not perfect but maybe for XIII they will have a refined and better version.
P.S. Just finished replaying FF-IV through on the SNES and it still great
I kinda liked the junction system from 8 but they all are good in their own way I'm sure 13's will be really good too (after initially getting used to it)

I think my favourite FF is probably VI, it just had such an interesting world and the whole magic industrial revolution thing i always find awesome. Lost oddysey reminded me of it in many ways. Just hoping that Square decide to continue thier series of ds remakes.
Osiris25, have you played FF IV the after years yet. It's definately worth a look if you enjoyed IV.
I don't think anyones mentioned FF9, am I the only person that likes that game, the skill and Gem systems, or whatever it was called, were brilliant.
Seems like theres two different things, setting-up and leveling-up. Setting-up should be as deep and versitile as possible like with FF7s materia, 8s junctioning, 9s gems and Tactics erm everything.
Leveling-up should be kept out of your control at least stat-wise, so you don't accidentaly end up creating a character you can't really use. And unless it has the brilliant FFX battle system that allows all characters to be used and gain EXP at the same time, the characters should all basicly be the same stat-wise, useful rolls can be asigned through setup and equiping etc.
Pff. Why are they even still calling it Final Fantasy?
$$$
no wait . . .

You know what Square, you wanna experiment with the genre, how about scrapping leveling all together? Each character starts with certain stats and they just stay the same for the whole game (except for equipment effects). I can't say grinding is my favourite thing in the world, you could still have exploration to unlock new spells and loot etc.
I guess that would make the game only about 15 hours long, is that a bad thing?
