Nintendo boss man Satoru Iwata has said the Wii and PS3 are "neck and neck" in Japan following a sharp decline in sales of Nintendo's console.
"A notable dip can be seen in sales of Wii this year, which is approximately half the size of last year," said Iwata during a recent financial results briefing. "On the other hand, Sony's PlayStation 3 showed a good transition and they increased unit sales by around 50 percent."
He went on: "The sheer contrast of the two platforms has often been reported lately. Although we held more than a 60 percent hardware market share through last year, Wii has 42 percent and PS3 40 percent share thus far this year so both machines are neck and neck in Japan."
Iwata showed off colourful graphs displaying Wii's continuing dominance in Europe and the US, and the overall decline in the home console market in 2009.
The full presentation can be seen here. It's quite interesting, if you're in to that sort of thing.
This is only in Japan though. Which is now officially the worlds smallest gaming market. Everywhere else it's still Nintendo, MS, Sony in terms of market share.
True. Good to hear that FF XIII won't have an install on the PS3 either.
I agree that dominance by any one company would be bad for the industry. Keeps things fresh and interesting. Also what would we have to bitch about on the net when works going slow.

Favourite crisps?
Before any of you get started - you're all wrong.
It's either Roast Beef Monster Munch or Frazzles.....anybody that says otherwise is clearly a fanboy.
It depends on what you mean by compete globally. In terms of market share, neither MS or Sony are in the picture, but in terms of weekly sales, it is very close between all three. I dont think any of the 3 companies could hope for the sort of week-to-week dominance Nintendo has enjoyed until recently.
Roast Beef Monster munch are a good call but flamin' hot has got to be the better flavoured monster munch, while we must all agree pickled onion are vile.

I don't mind Pickled Onion so much - I find all crisps of the family munchus-monstercus to be satisfying.
I'd love for them to bring back the hamburger flavour though - they were amazing.
Pickled onion Monster Munch or Space Raiders for myself. Or original Ringo's from 20 odd years ago, not those shady mock-ups they released a few years back.
Or CDC Savoury Straws, man those things were loaded with cheese. Haven't seen them in 15 years though

If we're getting nostalgic, do you remember Fish N' Chips?

Aye they were minging
Also Traditional Cheese McCoy's were brilliant, why they changed them into cheese and onion i'll never know. And what ever happened to Smith's Tubes.

Aye they were minging Do they still make Smith's Tubes?

No, I've not seen Tubes for years (were they actually called that? - I recall them having a slightly different name).
I still wish I could get hold of some Fish N' Chips....I absolutely loved them as a kid.
I managed to find a place that sells Roast Beef & Mustard Brannigans recently....now I just need to find some Quarterbacks!
Do they still make Salt & Shake, if that's what they were called? The most ridiculous crisps ever, I only ever managed to get one tasting of pure salt and the rest of nothing. Oh, and you can't beat salt 'n' vinegar Kettle Chips.

They were defo called Tubes. Haven't seen any Brannigans for ages, used to love the Roast Lamb and Mint flavour, but i couldn't stand the TV ads for them. "What does the dog eat Brannigan?" "Fat assed coppers who can't talk properly now F-off out my shop!"

Salt & Shake are still alive and well - available pretty much everywhere....aren't they the oldest crisps available? - I've always quite liked the fact that you get a mixture of salted and unsalted crisps with them.
I've never really got on with Kettle Chips though - too hard.....if we're talking 'connoisseur' crisps, it has to be those ones you get on the trains that are made in Devon - the Chilli ones are way too hot though.
One thing that we must all agree on though - American crisps (or chips) are truly, truly horrendous.

Actually. Lays are great... Probably because they are owned by Pepsico who own Walkers.. They are Walkers crisps... but you get a larger bag which = win! It's just the colours of the bags that are misleading for the flavours... I am off to see my brother in America in 2 weeks! Lovely Lays

Cheet-Os were the ones that surprised me - that's one huge Wotsit!
Plus, what about all those Dorito flavours they get? - some of those are very nice.
Pah, you don't know what good crisps are till you come to Ireland and try the King or Tayto crisps, King cheese and onion is the best crisp ever made, fact (sort of).
Are Pringles considered a crisp? If not, McCoys are great, almost any flavour, APART from Salt and Vinegar, sickly.
Wiis problem is a lack of top quality games. Most of them are keep fit games, or puzzle games, or poor FPSes. If they have more games in future like COD4, which will be ported soon, they'll stand a better chance. I'm genuinely looking forward to the Wii HD, it should be excellent, hopefully.

Ok... I know what I'll be eating for 2 weeks! I'll have to sample loads and come back with my findings =)
Salt 'n Shake. A little boring maybe but they are innately satisfying to rip open and prepare for shuvving down my throat. Unless those chocolate pringle things you can get count as crisps. Then they win.
On topic, I'm surprised at this. Japan is still a big gaming market, obviously not as big as Europe and America, but still big, so Sony must be pleased with this. This is the first year of this gen where I actually wouldn't be surprised to see Sony 'win', and as others have said, competition can only be good for us gamers.

Pretzel Flips?
I would be so excited if I were to discover they are still in production. Please don't tell me you've mixed up your past and present tense dude, it will honestly break my heart, lol!
