New World Record set in Sonic 2 speed run
From our friends at the Golden Joystick Awards

As part of this year's Golden Joystick Awards, avid gamer James Richards was invited to take part in the Lucozade Alert Plus Super Sonic Challenge, with the aim of setting a new Guinness World Record for the first level of Sonic 2. Actually, not one World Record but two, as James tackled the challenge on both Xbox 360 and PS3.

Spurred on by a crowd of onlookers and members of the press, and with adjudicators from Guinness in attendance, James recorded a time of 22 seconds for the first stage of the Emerald Hill Zone on both consoles.

"I've been training for weeks for this," exclaimed a chuffed-to-bits James, who already holds the record for speed-running Sonic 3. "I'm so happy to have set the record - one that I hope will stand for some time to come!"

Setting a World Record is no mean feat, as Gaz Deaves, editor of Guinness World Records: Gamers' Edition, points out: "The first level of Sonic The Hedgehog 2 is one of the toughest challenges in videogames speed running... James' achievement would make any gamer proud."

Lucozade, who laid down the challenge, were quick to applaud James. "Lucozade Alert Plus is perfect for gamers like James as it's designed to improve mental performance, focus and concentration whatever the challenge," said brand manager Alex Saunders. "It's great to have been involved in the Lucozade Alert Plus Super Sonic Challenge and we send our congratulations to James in setting these new Guinness World Records"

they burstables are spaced out like that intentionally i think...

would be too jammy otherwise.

but he also has to hit every enemy and miss the spring boards in order to get to the end so quickly.

Its not being jammie its skill.

Well done mate!

I did think that. But even if they were spaced intentionally, what are the chances of him hitting them all? Pretty slim I reckon.

22 seconds was the best he could do and he has been practising? Back in the day me and my mades did 19 seconds all day long and 18 if the wind was blowing in the right direction.

what a crettin

Oh yeah for sure....not!
Anyone can claim that.
Prove it, cause I don't believe you.

b******s to this, speed runs shouldn't be attempted on PORTS of the game.

The ports have altered timing and don't play identical to the originals...

I can do 21 seconds on emulator.

22 seconds on a port? FAIL.

pussies. when i were a lad we used to finish that level 30 seconds before it started, then we'd drink a cup of sulphuric acid, work twenty-nine hours a day down mill, and pay mill owner for permission to come to work, and when we got home, our Dad and our mother would kill us and dance about on our graves singing Hallelujah.

And you try and tell the young people of today that ..... they won't believe you.
