Sony has released an update for PS3's PlayTV, adding support for HD television recording.
The 1.21 update lets you "watch, pause and record High Definition TV for DVB-T standard broadcast," says the PlayStation Blog, and when Freeview HD channels arrive before Christmas you'll be able to watch and record them through PlayTV.
While we're on the subject of HD goodies, the PlayTV update also includes better standard definition upscaling.
"We have managed to improve the SD upscaling feature of PlayTV so when you are watching SD channels on an HD screen they will look as good as they possibly can," says PSN man James Thorpe.
Remote play support for the new Aino mobile phone is also added in 1.21.
I tip my hat to you Sony sir, I didn't expect to see that and I don't actually remember Sony ever saying they would support Freeview HD - so this is a nice suprise to me as I use PlayTV a lot.
Also improved SD upscalling is nice, the current upscalling is nothing to write home about.

No we won't as the UK are using DVB-T2 not DVB-T so a pretty useless update all in all

There are carrying out testing at present, and is aimed to be brought out at some point this year:
I didn't think PlayTV will work with FreeviewHD because a different tuner is needed: DVB-T2. I think they need to release a new hardware version to support this.
I use Freesat because I don't have an outdoor ariel and my Freesat comes direct from my old Sky Dish. The picture quality is as good as Sky Satellite.
Unfortunately I can't use PlayTV with Freesat(!)
If FreeviewHD is any good I'm definitely looking to hook up my PS3 with it.
Though it is highly unlikely that will happen this year, it is still a good update for Play TV to have.
Yes trials are being held and the first area (Manchester/Liverpool) is due to go live in December but the UK will use DVB-T2. From website you linked to -
Viewers who want to watch the new channels will have to buy a new set-top box incorporating the superior MPEG-4 rather than MPEG-2 compression technology. MPEG-4 is twice as efficient as the MPEG-2 standard , while a new European transmission standard (DVB-T2) will increase capacity by 30%.

PlayTV is sold in other countries in Europe you know, some of which will be using the DVB-T standard for their HDTV broadcasts and will now be able to view these HD broadcasts on their PS3 so its hardly a useless update.

Yes I know PlayTV is sold outside UK and that most of the rest of Europe/Australia uses DVB-T for HD channels so for that reason its a worthy update, just meant it was an unfortunately pointless one for those of us in UK. From how well PlayTV performs (It's the most used thing on my PS3) I'm certainly hoping Sony release a new version for the UK that will decode DVB-T2
