Microsoft cuts 800 jobs

2% of UK workforce affected
Microsoft has announced it's cutting 800 more jobs as part of ongoing cost-cutting measures.

The 800 global redundancies - the first of 5,000 planned job cuts at the company over the next 18 months - will affect about 2% of its UK workforce, it says, which encompasses more than 2,700 staff.

It's not mentioned how the cuts will, if at all, affect the Xbox division, but we've contacted Microsoft UK for comment.

Microsoft said in a statement: "We're eliminating around 800 positions across multiple businesses and locations and have completed our reduction plan sooner than we had anticipated 11 months ago."

"At the same time, we continue to hire in priority areas, but also understand that continuing to manage our businesses closely, as we always do, can mean additional headcount adjustments."

@PS3

1) "The empire" is crumbling no more than Sony, or did you forget the thousands upon thousands of lay-offs Sony announced over the past year?

2) Short of gross negligence and incompetence, seeing someone fired due to no immediate fault of their own brings me little pleasure. I don't know about you.
