Valve says high-end PC Left 4 Dead mods "can't run" on Xbox 360, which is part of a problem in bringing user content to the console version.
Speaking to CVG in a recent interview (read part two now), Left 4 Dead lead Chet Faliszek said the developer's looking to work with the community in bringing their mod specs down - and possibly to Xbox 360.
"One of the problems now when you look at a lot of the mods that are made is they can't run on low-end PCs, they can't even run on mid-end PCs often - they can only run on high-end PCs. They can't run on Xbox 360," he said.
"There's a lot of work we do to get things to the performance levels that are acceptable for us. You look at a lot of the modders and obviously that's a very technical thing; you have to know the engine and the tools very well," he said.

That headline's a bit of a no-brainer, isn't it? The 360 is 4-year-old tech running DirectX9. It's a single core card, so obviously it's not going to be able to run stuff that sits comfortably on a Geforce GTX295 running DX11.

well not really, l4d and l4d2 are made with the same tools but can run on a variety of platforms and specs. i think the point is that modders dont optimise their games for low spec platforms, which includes lower spec pc's not just the 360.
Considering how low spec L4D is im glad the modders have added more high end stuff. Why should the 360 hold back the modding community as well as the mainstream? I say throw everything they've got at high end
That would alienate a massive number of people. Next time they release the results of the hardware surveys, read them - you'll find that most people are running a couple of year old equipment. Which means they'd limit their market really seriously, and no business wants to do that.
When they say "high-end mods", do they really mean "thousands of zombies thrown inefficiently into the same room"?
I can't imagine that these modders have added anything much more processor-heavy than the original L4D other than a higher population.
could be higher texture resolution or potentially higher polygon models if they get into that area. could also be tweaking the engine so really low res textures are used at certain distances from the player.

I'd consider a "high-end mod" to be anything that requires more power to run than the original game. Whether it's increased polycounts or quad-sized textures, heavy post-process effects or simply having a million bodies on screen at once - it taxes the system more than the developers intended.
All DX10 cards support DX11, just not all of its features( Tessellation etc. ), the multicore support is available to all DX10 cards( and should improve all games performance ).
Most of the source mods are high res textures etc. these need a gfx card with a 800Mb-1Gb or video ram, they'll never run on a 360.
not to mention MS have a tighter a$$hole than a 16 year old virgin when it comes to user created stuff and/or free content.
and yh mr gpu expert guy, nvidia havent even confirmed that their new card gtx300?? even supports full dx11 so a 295 isnt going to do much good. you need an ati card for now. Anyways abt power; the consoles were pretty nice at launch but they've been left in the dust since the 8800gtx rolled out!
All DX10 cards support DX11, just not all of its features( Tessellation etc. ), the multicore support is available to all DX10 cards( and should improve all games performance ).

However, DX11 is just an extended renderpath so, there is full backwards compatibility (NOT support) unlike the woes of PixelShader 3.0

They have, Fermi's been delayed until January 2010 and will support DX11, that card will be the high end card and will most likely cost a fortune( still will bring down the prices of the 5850's and 5870's and soon the 5890 dual card ). The mid range cards were due in March but with this delay probably wont be released until April, the 350 will be a beast if its not mega expensive.

EDIT: holy hell! 3billion transistors! for real! and thats all in a 40nm process. damn, that's kinda impressive (double the 280!). the 1.5gb gddr5 is just icing. will be interesting how the architecture works out and see how much the gddr5 packs (made the ati cards what they are i think).
