Project Natal has been named one of Time Magazine's Inventions of the Year.
This is the third major honour the 360 motion camera has received this past month including the Popular Mechanics 2009 Breakthrough Award and Popular Science Best of What's New Grand Award, says Major Nelson.

Didn't people say all this about the EyeToy, though? I'm skeptical of both this and the PS3 wands because neither EyeToy or the Wii got/get the attention they deserve/d (especially EyeToy). My fear is that both will be used for Cooking Mama clones.
The expectation Natal has garnered in such a short space of time is something else (considering what little we've seen of it), well done MS and the Dev team behind it.
2010 is going to be a pretty exciting year for Gamers on all platforms!

Don't say that! There will be narrow minds exploding all over the internet.
Sure its a great idea, but its how they use it that counts.
Motion Control as it stands at the moment is the biggest waste of space ever. If they manage to redefine it, then it may be worth all the fuss.. Otherwise it's just the typical hyperbole of modern times.

Ahh but Ric, that's what narrow minds are supposed to do .
There is always someone one step beyond. PC mind control... http://kotaku.com/358459/pc-psychic-controller-hits-this-year
PC mind control?
The only thing I worry about is the sub-concious. Imagine going to work and mentally telling your PC to open Outlook, only for it to open IE and take you to a porn site.

Amazing!
I'm imagining something more like the time machine Kip and Uncle Rico buy in Napoleon Dynamite.

I half wish that MS had never even mentioned Natal.
We all saw the launch at E3 and got a very basic idea of what it's capable of - ever since then, it's basically been written off as nothing more than an accessory to keep-fit games, cooking games and general shovel-ware.
God only knows where people are getting this information from, the devs that have been given access to the kit have done nothing but sing its praises.
The bottom line is - we don't actually know what it can or can't do, we don't know what it's best suited to and we definitely don't know what the developers have in mind for it.
I wouldn't say I'm excited by Natal - but, I'm definitely very curious about it.

Makes me wonder just why Time have given them such an award. Surley an invention is something that is finished or as at least been seen by the public working.

I agree - for all we know, that whole display at E3 was just a video!
Until it's actually released and we can see the games, it's anyones' guess.
I agree with the above. For all we know, the vids were all 'mock ups' of what they are planning. Babe Ruth wouldn't get a home run for pointing into the stands until he his the ball out of the park.
Does anyone yet know how you pause a game when you're playing purely with Natal?
Say, "pause"?
just dont say "paws"
I remember my brother having a voice command program for his PC years ago - something that included a parrot. He didn't have it installed for long, especially after I realised that I could just shout 'Close' twice to shut his PC down.
Well Time may of been given some hands on time with the dev stuff to say this but as noted above until the actual version that will be sold to us is tested/proven then this may be a bit premature. I hope this and the PS3 version succeed as long as they dont release 5 million party games for them. Interesting times ahead indeed.
So teleportation got a nod as well? So the list is filled with inventions that don't actually exist in the real world or in consumers hands. I mean if a teleporter was up and running we'd have heard about it. It would only be the BIGGEST thing to ever happen to mankind. No cars, trains, planes nothing, just teleporters.

Which was kind of my point.. If the little 360 has to constantly do voice recognition, just so you can pause a game? Surely that's a bit of a resource hog?
We should hand awards to devices for what they achieve, not based on the hype. Seadragon, isynth; there have been no shortage of MS hype candidates over the years but time tells as to the applicability.
