The game will cost 800 Wii points (around £9), according to GameSpot, which you may think is pricy for a near 20-year-old game. But don't even think about that - it's Super Mario Kart. The holy grail of kart racers. Why it wasn't released alongside the Wii game is beyond us.

SMK will also be joined on the Wii download service by other cult SNES classic, Pilotwings, and the N64 original version of Nintendo all-star fighter, Super Smash Bros.
Today is update day for the US Virtual Console. Friday is our day in UK, and we've asked Nintendo if SMK will be out here this week, too. Fingers crossed...
I had posted this in the 'Miyamoto 2D games thread'.
I had said:
"This is some good news:

Super Mario Kart may be out THIS Friday here in Europe if Wikipedia can be trusted in this instance. Both Eurogamer and Gamespot (where EG got the news from) have reported this.
(Super Smash Bros and Pilotwings have been available to European and Japanese gamers, but not to US ones. They only just getting them now)."
I've still got my SNES carts working for Pilotwings & Mario Kart, but I might just pick up the VC versions for convenience. Super Mario Kart is a blast, but Piltowings is an often forgotten great that is still really playable today and needs a new version making
I've still got my Mario Kart cartridge and I played it the other day. Fully complete with every gold and all ridiculously fast times set. What a childhood.
contrary to the poster 3 above me i think this is the finest mario kart ever and plays sublimely. ditigal control, twitch play is what makes it so great. definite purchase for me. i played this constantly throughout my 3 years at uni. winner stays on
Ahh Super Mario Kart. The only Mario Kart game I've enjoyed playing - it just lost something when it went 3D. £9 is bloody expensive for a SNES game though, regardless of the title!!
