Super Mario Kart headed to VC

Super NES classic to be joined by Pilotwings and Smash Bros. originals
The absolutely epic Super NES original Super Mario Kart will finally arrive on the Virtual Console today, claim reports. About bloody time.

UPDATE: Nintendo's released the full North American Virtual Console update.

The game will cost 800 Wii points (around £9), according to GameSpot, which you may think is pricy for a near 20-year-old game. But don't even think about that - it's Super Mario Kart. The holy grail of kart racers. Why it wasn't released alongside the Wii game is beyond us.

SMK will also be joined on the Wii download service by other cult SNES classic, Pilotwings, and the N64 original version of Nintendo all-star fighter, Super Smash Bros.

Today is update day for the US Virtual Console. Friday is our day in UK, and we've asked Nintendo if SMK will be out here this week, too. Fingers crossed...

I had posted this in the 'Miyamoto 2D games thread'.

I had said:

"This is some good news:

Super Mario Kart may be out THIS Friday here in Europe if Wikipedia can be trusted in this instance. Both Eurogamer and Gamespot (where EG got the news from) have reported this.

(Super Smash Bros and Pilotwings have been available to European and Japanese gamers, but not to US ones. They only just getting them now)."

Good job I've still got 1500 sat on my Wii. This Friday could make for a great weekend if SMK does come out then Very Happy

I probably spent more time playing Mario Kart on the SNES than any other game. It was an after club classic.

Sadly, those days are gone, so I'll leave Mazza Kart in my fond memory drawer.

Excuse my french, but get the f**k in!!

Haven't spent any points in ages, don't know how many I've got. I think I may have some stars to register and maybe some points to get from that.

If that's not enough, I'm buying some.

I've still got my SNES carts working for Pilotwings & Mario Kart, but I might just pick up the VC versions for convenience. Super Mario Kart is a blast, but Piltowings is an often forgotten great that is still really playable today and needs a new version making WinkWinkWink

I hate the snes mario kart mk64 and wii are the better versions even double dash is better than the snes version.

The snes version looks terrible plays terrible and has the old look donkey kong.

I've still got my Mario Kart cartridge and I played it the other day. Fully complete with every gold and all ridiculously fast times set. What a childhood. Smile

9 quid seems a bit steep, but there still selling for more on ebay.

I think they didnt release it along with Mario Kart Wii as everybody would probably end up playing the version 'without bikes'.

contrary to the poster 3 above me i think this is the finest mario kart ever and plays sublimely. ditigal control, twitch play is what makes it so great. definite purchase for me. i played this constantly throughout my 3 years at uni. winner stays on Wink

Unfortunately I've never played SMK, its the only Mk I haven't played, I look forward to trying it out.

Ahh Super Mario Kart. The only Mario Kart game I've enjoyed playing - it just lost something when it went 3D. £9 is bloody expensive for a SNES game though, regardless of the title!!
potnoodle1 on 23 Nov '09
Maybe he meant $9, because 800 Wii points doesn't equal £9 on the UK service, 1000 points is £7, so 800 should be somewhere between £5 to £6.
