Cross-platform PSN a "differentiator for Sony" - Hirai

Online services to "increase brand loyalty of our Sony products"
PlayStation big man, Kazuo Hirai, has talked up the benefits of plans to expand PSN to other gadgets as a "core competence" and "differentiator" for the corporation. Big words follow...

A cross-platform online service that delivers downloadable games and videos to Sony's different products is a major advantage over its competitors, according to Hirai.

"That's the kind of combination that I think is not seen anywhere else," he said during a recent interview. "That I think is where our core competence lies, and that's a differentiator for Sony," he added.

"We want to increase the value, or the brand loyalty of our Sony products. There is no question about it," Hirai later said, admitting that Sony's previously lacked communication between its different units.

Hirai promises this has changed with latest chief exec Howard Stringer in the driving seat, according to Japan Today.

The comments follow the recent launch of the PS3-compatible Aino Sony Ericsson phone, which dons Remote Play functionality allowing you to control your PS3 and stream content from console to phone wirelessly.

basically one day the PSn will be renamed to the Sony Store and all Sony products will be able to access it.
So if you own a Sony TV, use would be able to go online on just your TV, visit the Sony Store and use the Video service or download TV wigets.

At the moment most Sony products all use the XMB, but Sony want all their products to access the same store and not just the Playstation. So you could access one store and download anything like Apps, games, music for your Sony walkman, videos for TV, PS3 or PSP. Or even firmware updates for any Sony product.

Simplifying... done.

"All our stuff works together so that makes us the best."

Hmmm. Who would have thought? But on a serious note I think it's good that they are making an effort to unify their systems so that they all use the PlayStation Network (as long as it has no negative implications). Means I could watch my downloaded movies on my phone and download music for my PS3. Now all I need is a Sony Ericsson phone. (I don't because Nokia is better Razz Phone Flame Wars!)

My Sony Bravia TV is online capable, though I never use it because I have a PS3. Still, it sounds like a good idea.

Does that mean TV's will soon have a built in HD?

Intriguing...

It's not surprising, Sony have crossed their walkman and cybershot brands to phones. This may be something different, but seems like a natural progression of that.

I've just returned to a Nokia (N96) after 5 great years using a Sony Erricson and its the biggest pile of s**te i've ever had the misfortune of owing. The battery has a mind of its own, lasting 3 days with heavy use then only lasting 6 hours after charge and with hardly any use. It resets itself every couple of days and reads "SIM Inactive". And its not just mine either as its a works phone and everyone else who has one has the same problems. Worst.Phone.Ever! I'll never get another Nokia again.

Quite funny that. I've got an N96 and I've got to say it's probably the most reliable phone I've had. Stays charged for days, hasn't crashed. I had a SE T610 a long while back (well 2 actually) and I could never hear what people were saying, even when the speaker was on full. Stayed away since. My Dad's still got a Nokia 3310 that still works. Smile

the bit the worries me is the fact sony are not software people bu nature and it shows on PSN. for example i put LBP on for the first time in ages yesterday. a new update pops up but in fact it's 3 new updates. it tool soooo long to download those updates and install them i had fallen asleep by the time they had finished (honestly). sony need to make sure content is delivered quickly and generally less updates would be appreciated.

then i tried MW2 on my 360 for the first time last night. it needed an update (surpise surprise) but this took about 3 seconds to download and run. simply put Sony need to pull their socks up on the networking side of things.

their idea for loads of products to talk to each other and access content is great though. there's nothing to stop anyone else doing it though.

My Dad swears by the Nokia 6210i, its the only phone he will use and has spent a small fortune replacing it from ebay. He just won't keep up with technology.

Still say the N96 is the worst phone i've had though. I'd still be using my k810i if it hadn't met an unfortunate end at the bottom of a flight of stairs.

The MW2 update was a tiny update, only a few MB, but LBP updates can be huge depending on how long its been since you last played. Also installing does take longer on the PS3 as it uses FAT32 and the 360 uses its own quick system.

But there are pro's and cons to this. The 360 is faster everytime but you are going to be forced to buy ONLY MS HDD's. The PS3 will always be slower, although you can upgrade yourself and SATA HDD's will always be bigger than what MS releases for the 360 plus they will always be a hell of a lot cheaper.
What you would rather have is up to you.

They're already halfway there, they use DNLA to link any compatible products that happen to be on your local network, my 2 year old c905 was immediatly recognised by the PS3 and I'm able to view my pics, videos and listen to music on the big screen, streaming it directly off the phone.

I'd be a bit wary though, once you start with this you'll be locked in (why get a samsung telly when you've already got Sony phone, sony console and sony DVD player (sorry Bluray)).

And if you do go for the samsung telly (cos its cheaper/better or whatever) you'll just end up sitting there thinking 'f**k. I wish I'd bought the Sony one cos I'm missing not having the PSN/having to use Samsung's pikey version.'

What Confused Tosh

Basically from downloading for Xbox and PS, they are roughly the same as each other. You will however hit peak periods on your broadband and PSN and also you have to take into account the size of the download file to guess how long it will take and it will likely vary for the average broadband user from day to day and hour to hour. (If you have 8Mbit broadband you should be able to get 1Mbyte download each second)

Xbox using it's own quick system?? Xbox uses FATX which is a slightly different iteration of standard FAT file system which (generally) just loses support for hardware and software that the Xbox doesn't need and therefore closes loop holes. etc.
PS3 uses a proprietry linux based system, but neither is going to be any noticable difference to you.

The Xbox is not always faster than the PS3 for downloads, there is no rule here, the only rule is that the Wii is absolutely snail-like in comparison to anything... ever.

well i've got all 3 systems, with the 360 and ps3 hard wired as well and from my own experience i can tell you matter of fact that the ps3 downloads are brain numbingly slow, it's not my connection or any hdd formatting type, Sony are just not as good as MS when it comes to delivering online. They may get there one day but there not even close right now. i think the Wii downloads are faster than ps3. but that's not saying they're fast.

I have 8Mbit broadband and get about 1Mbyte per second download on both Xbox and PS, the Wii lags behind on accessing content, not downloading. So, like I said, there is no general rule.
