Call of Duty series tops 55 million sales

Activision's FPS franchise rakes in $3 billion since 2003
The Call Of Duty franchise has surpassed 55 million unit sales since debuting in 2003, generating over $3 billion at retail.

That's according to data from the NPD Group, Chart-Track, GfK and publisher Activision's internal estimates.

The latest title in the franchise, Infinity Ward's Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, broke box office and videogame records with a worldwide estimated five-day sale through of approximately $550 million.

"Call Of Duty has become one of the greatest entertainment franchises of all time," said Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard. "If you consider the number of hours our audiences are engaged in playing Call Of Duty games, it is likely to be one of the most viewed of all entertainment experiences in modern history."

Yep, hype and a tried & tested gaming formula sure works...

I personally think this franchise is deeply over-hyped and a let down. I want more original IPs.

Come on dev's and publishers! Make it happen!!

Agreed. I will add to that that I also suspect the "CoD" franchise may be on its way out after the latest debacle. Bobby really is a pr!ck gauging by a number of his more select comments about what he wants to do with the gaming industry. May he never live to see them come to fruition, and may those plans never come to fruition for anyone at all.

Still behind the likes of GTA, Fifa, Zelda, and a long way to go to reach the big dogs; Mario and Pokemon. Might have to start releasing 2 CoD games a year, Acti.
