Tony Hawk miffed at RIDE reviews

Shuns "snarky" critics' negative reviews
The plastic board controller-operated Tony Hawks RIDE got pretty much murdered in reviews, and Tony Hawk isn't happy about it.

"Most snarky critics had their minds set before ever seeing/playing the game. I'm proud of what we created; it's innovative, responsive & fun," said Hawk on his Twitter feed in response to the review that have, so far, earned it an average score of 48 on Metacritic.

He's vented to The Sudbury Star, too. "I don't agree with people who say the board's not responsive. I think that they're just not giving it a fair shake. And I think a lot of them came into it with an attitude that it's going to suck."

He went on: "I know that (RIDE) is super fun, and I think there's a misconception that I just stick my name on a game," added Hawk. "I brought this idea to Activision, and I saw it through." Ah, NOW we see why he's so pissed.

"I've been playing it every step of the way and I am very proud of it," concluded Hawk.

Fair enough.

I've read numerous previews, and a lot of them say the board is too unresponsive, with some pulls completely ignored by the game. So I think the reviews are right, plus the ridiculous asking price just adds more fuel to the fire.

It wasn't a bad idea for a boarding game. In fact its a great one. Playing the likes of Shaun White and Skate it using the balance board on the wii have been some of the most fun i've had with games in the genre for years.

The problem I think a lot of people will have with ride is its price, It probably got such a blasting because of this. Your not tasked with telling people if the game is worth £40 but £100.

The fact that they made the board required also didn't help. If it had been optional, or compatible with other peripherals such as the balance board in my eyes would of made it a much more tempting prospect.

as it stands its a curio i justify the purchase of. And my house is already starting to become cluttered with guitars and other plastic gaming junk.

If you are rubbish on a real skateboard...Will you not also be rubbish on gaming skateboard? Just a thought!
funnyguy2001 on 7 Dec '09
this failure of tony hawk's f**king s**te ride has made me really happy. enough with all these s**t peripherals. anyone who spends £100 on this heep of dog c**k is in for the most gutting case of retail failure ever. take us back to tony hawk's 2 and can the bulls**t mate.
Sinthetic on 7 Dec '09
It might work for a professional skateboarder, but for most people, it was f**king useless Tony. It's unresponsive, difficult to control, it hurts your feet after two hours, and looks like s**t on the TV.
BIGAL-1992 on 7 Dec '09
its not that innovative.

top skater was out ages ago in arcades, sega saturn era. never played it, looked good though. probably cause that had a big sturdy board and massive plasma to play it on and handy rails to grab incase you were shit.
svd_grasshopper on 7 Dec '09
I'm looking forward to Youtube videos of people skating right into their TV sets.

Oh, and Tony you need to wake up and retire gracefully - the game is turd, and a very pricey turd at that.

Face facts Mr Hawk, the idea on paper might sound great but if it is not executed properly, the game WILL be sh*te! Peripherals or no peripherals, its all about rock solid, engaging gameplay. I'm sick of these so called 'stars' that lend their names to such dire games, then try to justify their endorsements.
Best Tony Hawks game was No. 3 on Dreamcast (for me anyway)...

Hah, i remember having a go on that in an arcade on Union Street in Glasgow. You really needed those handrails so perhaps the best way to play Ride is by kitting your house out like a disabled bathroom.

I remember that. It was ace too. Then again Sega arcade machines always are.

Activision seem to have a buisness model that says: Create a game that needs a plastic controller we can sell at a huge mark up.

Doesn't always work though does it.

If his game wasn't signed to Activision, i would feel a bit of sympathy towards him. But it is, so I don't.

Tony, you need to ask yourself why would all these reviewers approach it with a dismissive attitude. Once you realise that they have no reason whatsoever, maybe then you will be able to accept that fact that it is apparently not very good, regardless of how much hard work you have put into it.

Oh, and whoever it was above who said just go back to THPS 2, I couldn't agree with you more old chap. Magnificent design + Perfect Learning curve = yes.

Tony, Tony, Tony.....let's quit this moaning and all this skateboard malarky and get Morris Minor & The Majors back together!

Seems to be quite a common request. It was certainly the last one i played through, got bored of the others after a few go's, and i think the level design kinda fell apart after the 2nd one. Maybe a PSN/Live version of the first PS1 games could be the answer. None of this getting off the board pish either. Leave that to Skate (which was excellent as well).

I was going to go straight for the Morris Minor (got that on 12"!!) but wasn't sure if anyone would know what I was talking about.

No. Sleep. TIL BEDTIME!!!

I think the Hawkster is well past his sell by Parma. It annoys me when every year we get another load of endorsed tosh cluttering up shelves.
Three words bud...'Horse' 'Flog' 'Dead'
Its amazing how things start off so rosy as small independent developers put their hearts and souls into their work...and as soon as the 'guys in suits' take over...things just go from bad to worse.
Its always been the case to just churn out any old sh*te just to balance the spread sheets! Sigh...

Viz did a 'Who is the best Tony Hawk(s)?' about a year back.

It was very funny. Along with their Anti Stab Kebab Vest (NO STABBIN': I'M KEBABBIN'). Some of the stuff in that magazine makes me p**s myself.
ricflair on 7 Dec '09
Bet your not as miffed as the people who bought your game Tony, im sure they feel like theyve been taken for a RIDE!
WiiFuelee on 8 Dec '09
the problem is, he made a game he can play and enjoys. and hes one of the best sodding skateboarders to ever live. guess what, I'm not. the only thing im good at is eating and playing games. at the same time. SAT DOWN.

If i was energetic enough to stand up I'd GO AND SKATE. They lost me as a customer the second they made the board the only way to play. even if it was getting 100% reviews, its not designed for me.... and I've bought every tony hawk game so far.

Its more a guitar hero sequel than a tony hawk sequel, and that's why its not selling. and that's before you even tackle the issues of price and IT NOT WORKING.

Give me Sk8 on DS any day...
Jon Ahmad on 8 Dec '09
Tony should understand that his level of involvement with the game's development would have been very limited, if nothing beyond a 5-minute test. He should consider who keeps the license he is all to willing dole out to claw any sort of money.
It's automatically a niche target market when the prehipal of sort is involved and forced upon the player, so even if it was any good, sales would have been modest.
