Operation FlashPoint: Red River is 'tighter, more focused' than Dragon Rising

OXM gives CVG the inside track on Codemasters' new FPS

A World First preview of Operation Flashpoint: Red River is contained in the pages of the all-new Official Xbox Magazine - and the publication is impressed with what it's seen.

The title's name was outed yesterday by CVG - but very few further details are known, save an approximate 2011 release date.

However, OXM - which is with some subscribers today and in stores next week in the UK - has seen the game, and believes it's a "tighter", "more focused" games than predecessor Dragon Rising.

"Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising was tremendously ambitious, but struggled to deliver," OXM editor Jon Hicks told CVG.

"So we were pleased to see that the sequel is a tighter, more focused game that's nevertheless still striving for a more realistic recreation of warfare."

Dragon Rising got a decent critical reception on its release back in October, 2009 - but some of you had issues with it.

It won the admiration of PC Zone and went Top Five in the UK Chart.

Dragon rising was F*cking awful, i think i got to mission 3 before i wanted to kill myself.
And i'm sure as hell i won't be buying another Flashpoint game ever again xD

The was nothing wrong with the original OF on the PC. One of the best First Person Shooters out at the time. Pure carnage ^^ At least it was more of a simulation than arcade stuff like CoD and MoH.

OF:DR however certainly had issues and more than 'some' people had them.

i actually forced myself to finish dragon rising, i loved the idea behind more realistic gameplay, but dragon rising just didn't deliver, it was ok at times but nowhere near a fun to play as battlefield or cod.

The major problem i had was that the missions were just too boring, not much variation, the weapons were uninteresting and you couldn't really personalize your load out. ALso when you died it took back too far and sometimes i just couldn't be bothered to go through it all again.

hopefully this red river will be an improvement.

Tighter than Dragon Rising? Well, first time I played it got to level 3 and then I got stuck in a wall and died. Replayed level 3 and one of my squad mates turned into a helicopter which an enemy got in and destroyed me! That's not a joke,an enemy got in my team-mate and shot me. When it stopped glitching enough to play it was tedious as hell, they ramped up the difficulty to silly levels to hide from how short it is. A total shoddy product rushed out to nick peoples cash before MW2 came out, they burnt the bridge on this one. They lied and said it was free roaming, it isn't, you can go anywhere on mission seven, problem is there's nothing outside the mission area, no enemies no nothing, that constitutes a go anywhere game to them. Codies lost my support for life on this one, all hype no game testing, no fun, no game.

I loved the original OF on PC all the way back in 2001. It was huge and had a good variety of vehicles and weapons for its time. The AI sucked and it was glitchy as hell but I saw potential! Multiplayer was great.

So when they came out with DR 8 years later with a wave of media hype I rushed to buy it. Well f**k me it had ALL the same problems as it's predecessor!! I honestly don't know what they hell has changed apart from cramming it on to the Xbox and upgrading the graphics (a bit). I played it through cos I paid for it but I was shocked and very disappointed. Where were the leaps and bounds in improved gameplay/features? EIGHT YEARS MOFOS!

(It's worth pointing out that Codemasters took the OF brand and remade the original Bohemia Interactive game - so it's not fair to say they had 8 years, but it's how I FEEL, okay?!)

I always thought the addition of animals would have improved the game by 1000 percent - something Red Dead Redemption did very well. Having birds fly out of trees if you make too much noise going through them would be a subtle yet excellent way to detect enemy forces nearby. Or sheep and cows getting spooked and moving to the other side of fields they are in. If you launch in to a fire fight then they all run for their lives. Potential to use their dead bodies as cover when approaching enemy positions. Etc etc.

I too think there is room for a "realistic" battlefield simulation that OF aspires to be - but despite getting a few things "kind of right", OF falls makes a balls up of the rest of it.

I doubt this new version will be any different. I predict: s**tty AI, buggy and glitchy (doorways/stairs - oh joy!) and acres of soulless countryside.

Dragon Rising was a completly pointless game with Armed Assault 2 out, such a shame they won't give the Operation Flashpoint name away to the original devs and instead make dumbed down s**t with it.

If you're going to make a CoD clone do it properly, if you're going to make an Armed Assault/original OF clone then do it properly. Otherwise you're left with something in between which is boring to both playerbases.

Damn right. Dragon Rising was a downright disgrace. f**king awful.

I can't believe that they have the cheek to release an expansion when the first game was a complete disgrace. I loved flashpoint one and even enjoyed the co-op with my mates but the online multiplay was the worst I've ever experienced in my 25 years of being a gamer. No dedicated servers and a complete lack of online games to join meant that after a few days of purchase it was put into my games cd wallet and hasn't seen the light of day since.
Wobblyman on 31 Jul '10
It was as buggy as ARMA but not even half as good. Please do smthg decent this time so the name doesn't become a laughing stock.

Yeah I was stunned to see an expansion pack whenever the mulitplayer didn't even work. My mate bought it and wanted to play co-op so I rented it from Lovefilm with the intention of keeping it a few weeks. Didn't last a weekend. We couldn't get past level 3, always always lost connection. What a joke. I never touched the single player, I have ARMA2 for the real experience and even though it to is buggy as hell its a million times better than this crap.

PS3 version by the way

I can live with the bugs and glitches, just put the frigging mission editor back in the console version

yea I dont care as it was so a wate of money for me OFP2 had s**t game brain control: mission lois the stupid squad I saved kept getting caught & I used all stelf mods.

If I want real then I would do what my family did & join the army

It looks like I'm swimming against the tide here but I thought Dragon Rising was epic. I'm sick to s**t of run and gun b******s and leave CoD/MoH to my little brother. One shot from nowhere and back to the beginning, losing 30 minutes, makes a life worth worrying about again. Okay so it was buggy as s**t and the lack of animals was just annoying but it's an 85/100 game any day of the week if you think otherwise you're 11 or retarded. Fact.
