Zoocube Review

Make like a latter-day Noah
Make like a latter-day Noah

The best puzzle games are often the ones that are the simplest to play but the most complicated to explain. ZooCube's no exception. We'll have a go, but you won't really get it until you try it for yourself.

Animals have been trapped inside weird-shaped objects. These blocks fall from three directions on the screen towards the cube in the middle. If two of the same type of animal blocks touch, the block disappears and the animal inside is rescued. You can rotate the cube in three directions to match the animals to each face of the cube.

With us so far? As the shapes pile up, you can juggle them to switch their order on the cube. Power-ups and point bonuses appear in the sky around the cube - collect those by letting the animal blocks fall over them. The idea is to match the shapes and score as many points as possible, while regularly clearing the cube of animals to move to the next level.

There are different modes of play, and multiplayer games too. It's a great puzzler; one go can turn into a major session. Hardly what you bought your GC for, but still good fun.

// multiplay mammals
Some puzzle games are best played in single-player, while others are better in multi. ZooCube manages to be enjoyable in both and offers a bunch of different modes for up to four players.
The screens are teeny, so use the colours to help guide those mammals to safety
// also on gba!
You can also rescue those endangered species on the move with the GBA version of ZooCube. It's essentially the same, but instead of matching weird animal shapes, the blocks falling are simpler geometric forms. It's just as playable but, without the crazy animal animations and donkey noises, it's missing much of the charm of the GC version. We'd give it a six out of ten.
No animals - maybe it should be called CubeCube instead...
The backgrounds are much plainer in the GBA version
