Although Super Mario 64 is predominately a platform adventure, it features a range of different styles which will try all your gaming skills. Sometimes your reactions will be tested as you attempt to avoid falling off a huge helter-skelter, while simple puzzles also abound where you might have to work out which order to open chests without suffering an electric shock. In fact, as the game progresses you're asked to use all of Mario's special moves in pursuit of hidden stars, and it could take you months to unlock all the secrets. Aside from the stunning graphics, SM64 sounds great too! Mario speaks at regular intervals, as does the Princess in the intro and end sequence. The music is also excellent and, rather than having to load from a crummy CD, when the mood of the action changes the music alters instantly. All the tunes are quite twee in the traditional Nintendo style, but you'll soon be humming them in your sleep! SM64 takes all the Mario personality and charm that was established in the earlier classics, and brings them crashing into the next generation. The graphics are so finely detailed that you'll soon forget you're playing a game - it's more like taking part in the best cartoon you've ever seen.

Believe the hype - Super Mario 64 has set the standard for videogames right into the 21st Century. Even if you complete the game in a few weeks you'll always come back to replay your favourite levels. A title every true games fan should own.
