Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire Review

Average game, but for SW fans a must
Unlike previous Star Wars adventures, you take on the role of a new hero: Dash Rendar, a smuggler with a planet-sized ego. It features ten levels of hot Star Wars action spread across four linked 'chapters'. Four of the levels see Dash piloting various vehicles and spaceships, while the rest are Doom-style first-person blasts. There are a few long-winded, drawn-out sequences which let things down slightly, most notably the gun turret levels which become tiresome long before completion. It's also slightly unfortunate that the best level by far is Battle on Hoth; because it's the first level, everything that follows comes as a disappointment. The first person sections too are something of a disappointment, and the whole product has the air of a 'rush job' about it. Still, if you're a mad Star Wars fan, then the pros definitely outweigh the cons. For the rest of us? Well the Hoth battle and Skyhook level are pretty spectacular, but aside from that there's little to hold the interest of 'normal' people.

Verdict
SOTE is a mix of rough and smooth, but overall it adds up to a great game. The sheer variety of game styles should keep you coming back for more but after you've struggled through Medium difficulty, you might not want to continue.
