Pilotwings 64 Review

Addictive flying adventure
If you've ever dreamed of soaring solo above the clouds, Pilotwings 64 is an essential buy. Six pilots have gathered together to take part in a range of airborne missions, all in the hope of winning aviator's badges and receiving their pilot's licences. In all, 28 different courses are ready to be explored, requiring our heroes to pilot different vehicles, from Gyrocopters to Hang Gliders, and from Rocket Belts to Icarus-like Birdman wings. Reach for the sky!

To win badges, players must complete a series of missions. Some of these tasks involve flying through hoops, shooting missiles at a tearaway robot, negotiating underground tunnels, bouncing balls across an island or taking photographs of an oil refinery. If you score more than 70% in a certain event you'll win a Bronze badge, while 80% will net you the Silver. Winning Gold badges is your key to unlocking the awesome bonus games. However, the best part of Pilotwings 64 is exploring the four islands. You'll not believe just how huge the islands really are and, because certain elements are hidden at first, it'll take you months to see everything. Perhaps Pilotwings 64 isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea, but it's a truly excellent game nonetheless.

Verdict
PW64 is an outstanding game and a totally unique experience, but it won't be to everyone's taste. Even when you've opened all the bonus games you'll still come back to explore the islands and replay your favourite levels.
