6-Sep-2002 2D fighting taken to the extreme 2D fighting taken to the extreme
Your Cube is the videogame equivalent of a celebrity hang-out, and the guest list just grew out of control. The tiny console's lid is heaving because 44 of the world's greatest action heroes have muscled in for the fight to end them all.
If it weren't for the fact that Capcom is no doubt planning another sequel, we'd call this the ultimate 2D fighting experience. Capcom versus SNK 2, already available for PS2, has given fighting pros enough to keep 'em quiet for a good couple of years. Now this revised Cube version - dubbed 'EO' for 'Easy Operation' - makes it accessible to infant monkeys too.
DEVASTATING WARRIORS This is a record showing for a fighting roster and will take some beating. And that's not 44 random Janes and Joes (actually, there is a Joe but...), this is the best in combined Capcom and SNK recorded history.
Because of the Ratio system, which balances the strength of your team, even the most extreme match-ups are a fair fight. You also get to choose from six 'Groove' modes, which mix and match the best tactics from previous Capcom and SNK fighters. It's genius, or something very close to it.
For the Cube version a new mode is introduced that maps all movement onto the analog stick, punches and kicks onto the L and R triggers, and all the special moves onto the C-stick. Varying strengths of punch and kick are dictated by the amount of pressure on L or R. The type of special move is decided by the exact angle of the C-stick when it is pushed, with the most powerful requiring extra precision.
It's a nicely worked gesture on Capcom's part, but the feature's really only included for people who probably wouldn't play a game like this anyway.

Verdict
Could be described as the greatest 2D fighting experience ever. The top of its league, but not quite the limit of your Cube's potential.
The backdrops in Capcom Vs Snk are amazing - ranging from colourful Nebuta Matsuri kites in Tokyo to scenes of icy danger, where an ice breaker has to penetrate icebergs...
Fighting cuties can't distract from the awesome backdrops...
...like in this stage where an ice breaker powers through the icebergs
