Doom 64 Review

Classic game revamped for the Nintendo 64
Rather than press on with doing Quake, Midway decided it would a grand idea to release itis 3-year old grandaddy instead. Instead of sending good old Doom out with a zimmer frame, however, theyive given it a brain transplant, a new hip and someone elseis kidneys. So to speak.
Essentially this is Doom: The Master Class. The all-new 3D engine is fast and smooth, and the new textures and enemy renders are cool, whilst keeping in with the original Doom flavour. The new levels (30 of eem) offer as much challenge as any previous version, although the traps can get a little cheesy at times. Thereis no music to speak of, just scary ambient sounds that would give the Dr. Who era BBC Radiophonic Workshop nightmares, and the monster growls and shotgun blasts are spot on.
So why canit I recommend Doom whole-heartedly? Well itis quite simple. Doom was cool 3 years ago, but now we have the likes of Turok and Duke Nukem as the N64 competition. And creating such a smooth 3D engine is a laudable achievement, but to shackle it to the limitations of Doom is near criminal.

Verdict
While the lick of 64-bit paint looks good, you canit hide that fact that Doom is getting rather creaky now. If youire a massive Doom fan youill get a kick out of it , but for the rest of us it may be time to look elsewhere for 3D shoot-eem-up thrills.
