Shenmue 2 Review

One of Dreamcast's last great adventures arrives on Xbox and aside from English-language acting, there's not a lot that's new.
You join Ryo Hazuki in the second chapter of his quest to avenge his father's murder at the hands of possibly dark forces. You'll explore a living Hong Kong, have fist fights with gruff natives and piece together the mystery.

HONG KONG POOEY
Nothing in Shenmue II will please players who like instant thrills. From the moment Ryo steps off the boat in Hong Kong, prepare for dogged exploration and long conversations with almost everyone you meet. The tasty graphics and authentic atmosphere might help sugar the pill of slow gameplay, but the awful voice acting makes the bile rise straight back up.
Next to recent role-players and action games, Shenmue II feels like a niche title. It has neither the depth of fighting offered by turn-based role-players, nor the pace and sense of awed discovery of more action-orientated adventures. It's also extremely linear and restrictive, despite promising a 'go anywhere, do anything' world. But it's immaculately produced and, provided you can set aside long hours for systematic exploration and methodical questioning, pretty enjoyable too.

// Overview
Verdict
It has lost a lot of its appeal since the DC days, but Shenmue's still worth a look, even with its snail's pace and distinct lack of laughs.
