House of the Dead 3 Review

Make zombie paste

You can judge the extent of the arcade's demise by Sega's choosing to release the third instalment of its popular zombie blaster on the Xbox, bypassing the arcades altogether.

The arcade's loss is the Xbox's gain, as House Of The Dead III is a fun blaster that remains true to the spirit of the series, right up until the final boss. Everything you'd expect from a zombie blaster is here, with plenty of exploding guts, technicians to save, bonuses to find and paths to choose.

However, one vital part of the gameplay has been tampered with. You no longer have to shoot outside the screen to reload! Yep, an intrinsic ingredient of the gun game has gone: Dead III features automatic reloads - we're flummoxed as to why.

Still, any sequel that gives you its predecessor as an unlockable extra can't be all that bad and if you're considering buying this, make sure you get hold of the compatible Thrusmaster Beretta lightgun. You know it makes sense.

Verdict
A frantic, knee-deep-in-guts zombie blaster that's fun to play but doesn't quite manage to reach the heights of its forerunners.
