The popularity of fishing games might seem baffling to some, but there's something strangely appealing about the quiet simplicity of pitting your humungous human brain against that of the humble fish.

Capcom's latest contribution to the genre attempts to convey the guilty pleasure of luring fish to their doom in pleasant surroundings. You get to choose from three professional fishermen all vying to become supreme Master Bass Fisherman.

There are three main gameplay modes. In Arcade mode you have to catch as many Bass as possible within a strict time limit to earn high rankings. In Simulation mode it's size that matters most. The bigger the Bass you catch, the more points you earn to spend in the shop on anything from speedboats to magic hats.

Meanwhile, in Free Fishing mode you can chill out, enjoy the scenery and practise your casting skills.

The arcade style works well, and you'll find yourself strangely addicted to choosing the right lure or bribing the local expert for the latest fishing tips.
