Friday 25-Jul-2003 4:51 PM Spyro the dragon has battled various terrors over the years, but can the plucky creature overcome overwhelming public indifference to a new game? New screens today, you lucky people, from Spyro's latest GBA title Spyro: Attack of the Rhynocs. There are some who'd say that Spyro seems to have fallen on hard times since his heyday, when various PlayStation types seem to think he was a match for Mario 64.
Indeed, these days we wouldn't be surprised to see the cutesy dragon supping from a bottle of white spirit whilst sat on a park bench with some fellow dragon hobos, but Spyro has enjoyed big successes in the past; if he appears to have run out of steam with the last couple of games, well, hopefully this new GBA title will put the adorable little reptile back on top.
The story behind this latest adventure goes that Spyro and his mates have somehow managed to tear a hole in the space fabric between the Dragon and Rhynoc realms, with the net result that Rhynoc's are pouring into the Dragon realm.
You may wonder what's so wrong in some harmless, asylum seeking Rhynocs entering another dimension, but apparently these 'nocs are a bunch of wrong 'uns; apparently the dimensions will meld together if the Rhynocs continue their immigation campaign.
All of which is an extraordinarily long-winded and unnecessary pre-amble that obscures the facts; the latest Spyro game is a GBA-exclusive that will feature 14 levels that combine isometric and side-on action with three playable characters and new co-operative and head to head multiplayer modes. We can be succinct when we have to be. Spyro is out later this year...
