Monday 28-Jul-2003 3:23 PM Classic NES beat'em-up side-scrolling adventure romp gets the GBA treatment Updated for the GBA, Atlus is re-releasing the age-old NES game River City Ransom which it claims features a significant amount of action, fighting and role-playing all in one slip-in cart. Mind, Atlus only gave us this one screenshot, so work out the bits from this. Like a magic eye. In Japanese.
River City has its high school held captive and held to ransom by ganglord Slick and his ne'er-do-well cronies. Crivens!
It's up to you to save the town from the fear of bad lads smoking, skulking and dissing old ladies because, as luck would have it, the game's heroes Alex and Ryan were wagging school that day. Free from the captivity, they have the bright idea to save their chums and rescue their girlfriends. Bless.
Actually more of a side-scrolling beat-'em-up, River City Ransom Ex still offers a variety of game modes: Story Mode that's story-driven, with one or two-player co-operative mode, and two-player Battle Mode where you create a character and take on your mates.
River City Ransom EX's RPG elements let you increase your stats and learn powerful techniques, while the story side of things lets you gather clues and make and break friendships.
The customisation and game sounds promising, but we shall see how things are progressing when we get further shots and details from Atlus. Is it really more than a side-scrolling puncher?
In the meantime, make what you will from this lonely shot prior to River City Ransom EX's release early in 2004.
